Very bad decision indeed. "the fanboys" are getting their party on, but its not gona happen in 2010. Italy is in need of lot of changings, but Lippi is not the right coach for this at this period. The fact that its Lippi will make the expectation go sky high. In 06 the team might have had the scandal pressure on them, but if they had failed, they would have had an excuse, besides most where expecting brazil or argentina to succeed in 06.
But now with Lippis record and what he has achieved Italy will go to 2010 as one of the favorites.

2012 is the more likely year, as italy makes final in every 6 year since 94. And seeing the younger talent what italy has, i can see Italy doing well in next euro, especially if certain juventinis get going. I dont know how long Ancelotti will stay at milan, but after 2010 i could see him taking over, and with his experience the team could achieve something, besides a different task for ancelotti.

Alen is spot on with what he's saying. All Lippi will be stuck with is youngsters and overrated hyped players such as Aquilani with De Rossi as captain and Chiellini next to Barzagli at the back.

I think the quality is there ......
Yeah, the u21 looks good, but that could be said about every single u21 team Italy had in last 15 years. Hopefully they'll match the fame of the WC 2006 winning players but no-one can guarantee that at this stage.

I was talking about the previous u21 team players, who won the u21 with ease but didn't develop as expected. Those guys who are now 24,25,26 or 27.
These were the guys expected to play at this euro and in the WC 2010 but most of them disappointed.

To be more precise, i'm talking about the team that won the 2004 u21 championship in Germany.
That team was so superior (they won the final 3:0) that everyone thought they'll continue destroying everyone on their way in senior categories.
But if you look at them now you'll see that Gilardino, Caracciolo and Sculli won't be worthy successors of Toni, Inzaghi and Del Piero, D'Agostino, Pinzi, Rosina(still hope for him), Donadel and Brighi won't be as good as Pirlo, Totti, Gattuso, Camoranesi while Zaccardo, Barzagli, Bonera and Gamberini will not be the new Canna or Nesta.
Only De Rossi made it from that team and exactly this group of players should have led Italy on this euro and in the WC in two years.

Now, be brave and predict that the current u21 players won't fail in the future.

Good point on the U21 players of 2004.It is really a "lost generation" and that's why Italy might have problems in the future.
I think that the current U21 is superior to the one of 2004 though.

That was the squad of 2004.The bolded ones might have a chance to make the trip to South Africa IMO.Not every Azzurrino of 2004 had a place in the first 11 in their club back then, unlike most of the current Azzurrini.Still,I'd call them a lost generation.Of course nobody knows how the current U21 develops but I'm confident when it comes to players like Giovinco,De Silvestri,De Ceglie,Cigarini,Montolivo,Santacroce and G.Rossi.I'm sure they'll build a strong "bone" of the future Azzurri.Time will tell...

:agree:

The current u-21 has a lot of talent and I hope they really do become the next generation, unlike the team from 2004. I also think Rosina and Montolivo haven't been given a fair chance, so I'm hoping they will be part of the 2010 squad. :xfinger:

Lippi returns to Azzurri job
Thursday 26 June, 2008

It has been confirmed that Marcello Lippi will return to the Italy bench after the departure of Roberto Donadoni earlier this afternoon.

The Viareggio-born mastermind led the Azzurri to World Cup glory in 2006, but he left the job to take a Sabbatical.

Donadoni failed to live up to the expectations generated by his predecessor at Euro 2008 and his contract was declared void earlier today.

The Italian Press have been predicting Lippi’s return for months and now it is official.

The FIGC has confirmed that the former Juventus boss will take the reins and will be unveiled on July 1 in a Press conference in Rome.

"I am very, very, very happy," Lippi said. "I am also very motivated."

Between 2004 and 2006, Lippi took charge of Italy for 29 games and picked up 17 wins, 10 draws and just two defeats.

He didn't make a mistake. He's immortal anyway. Del Piero, Nesta, Totti, Pirlo, Zambrotta and Toni are the ones that will probably still compete for a spot. Other than that he'll call younger players. Lippi's no moron and is quite simply a good coach.
    Well said.

With Lippi you don't really need to worry....he'll find solution for everything.

Plus, what's with the bad decision thing.... is it bad decision because he returned back? r is it bad decision because you think there aren't enough youngsters in Italy to fill up places?

Lippi coming back? I don't see that as a bad decision, and I don't see what reasons you guys have or even the reasons some of you gave isn't that convincing. The man is one of the best coaches in football history if not the best. I don't know what bad decision you guys are talking about.

Lippi with the old players? some of you are exaggerating, really...... it's only been few hours since he was named the NT coach...who knows what players he'll go with, who knows what decisions he'll make??? the drama is pretty high over here i must say.

Even Media/Press wont have the balls to bash him anytime soon.
