I wont call this Lippi's worst decision,but I can see where Rebel is coming from.I would have prefered Ancelotti over him.Lippi's great..and the whole world knows that.But if Italy fall flat in the next tournament,Lippi will get a needless bad mark on his perfect International Career.Ancelotti would have injected some freshness into the squad,which is what this team needed after the Euro debacle.An old face coming back at Club level is good since you have more time and matches to play with,but this could turn into an Inter for Lippi.

I don't expect Lippi to do something at the world cup.
The Italians had a great generation but all of them are either retired or they'll be in their mid 30's in 2010. (Cannavaro, Del Piero, Nesta, Totti, Gattuso, Inzaghi, Toni, Materazzi, Zambrotta, Grosso,Pirlo etc)
The younger players, except Giovinco and Chiellini, aren't even close to being good enough to guarantee Italy a medal at the WC.

If Lippi continues with the old guard he'll certainly fail at the WC. If he introduces more young players he won't have enough time to create a winning team, and like i said, they aren't good enough to become a winning team.

Lippi made a huge mistake. He left the NT as a winner and he was going to stay remembered as a winner. But everything will be forgotten when he'll be eliminated in the groups or in the last 16 round.
He should have taken a club to manage, not the Italian NT.

It is better to retire in the best possible condition. He was given the chance to retire as the coach who won the World Cup. He won't achieve better than that, and that won't be a good thing for a coach like him.

Moreover, nothing has changed in his son's case. So, it seems his earlier retirement was just a media thing. He just made a wrong step that he will regret it for the rest of his life.

He didn't make a mistake. He's immortal anyway. Del Piero, Nesta, Totti, Pirlo, Zambrotta and Toni are the ones that will probably still compete for a spot. Other than that he'll call younger players. Lippi's no moron and is quite simply a good coach.

Toni?You've got to be kidding me.Despite his awesome club forum,his performances for the NT should prove that he is incapable of doing well at this level.He simply doesnt have the confidence.Plus a 33 year old front lining Italy's attack doesnt sound too good.

No-one's doubting Lippi here.
But take a look at the quality at his disposal (especially after 2 years) and you'll see that it will be extremely hard to make a good result with that team.

Donadoni should have been the one to start introducing younger players in the team.He didn't and i don't really blame him because the gap in quality between the old guard and the younger players is huge and it was a logical decission to go with the WC winners.
The gap is still huge but Lippi has even more problems because the oldies will be 2 years older in 2010 and their average age will be 33/34.

Lippi will take the maximum from the players he'll have, but when the quality is limited then it's normal not to expect much from Italy in 2010.

I think the quality is there when it comes to the next generation of Italy.The experience is lacking...

Buffon

Grosso=De Ceglie?
Zambrotta=De Silvestri?
Cannavaro=Chiellini?
Materazzi=Santacroce?

Camoranesi=Giovinco?
Gattuso=De Rossi?
Pirlo=Aquilani?
Montolivo?/Cigarini?

Del Piero=G.Rossi?
Toni=Acquafresca?

Other players who might get a shot:
Dessena
Pisano
Palombo
Maggio
Osvaldo
Marzoratti
Motta
Marco Rossi
Marchisio
Gilardino
Coda
...

That's basically the current U21 of Italy and a few mid-aged players,lots of them still don't have the quality or the experience and are very raw but that looks like a pretty decent first 11 in my opinion.

I think Lippi got to take the risk and even play with a few of these players at the qualification,this way they will get more experienced and mature.

Even if Italy will fail miserably at the WC,they have at least introduced a new generation and that's what is needed.We have to introduce the new generation step by step though,just like Portugal did.
