In Australia:

We dont go around in Acubra hats and stubbie shorts drinking Fosters. (not always :p)

We do not have Koalas and Kangaroos as pets, nor do we see them unless we go to a zoo. Koalas are endangered and Kangaroos are considered as pests by farmers.

We do not all live within a kilometre of a beach and walk around in our swimming costumes and sandals all year round.

We do not live in the outback eating grubs in towns where inbreeding is the done thing! There are about 19 million people in Australia and the majority of us live in cities. The largest city in Australia is Sydney with a population of close to 4 million. Sydney isn't the capital, though. The capital is called Canberra, in the ACT (Australian Capital Territory...how creative)

We do not always have 'barbies' and 'chuck another shrimp' on them. When Aussies have barbecues, it's mostly sausages and steaks.

All Australians don't sound like Paul Hogan from ‘Crocodile Dundee’." Or more recently, Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter. Paul Hogan and Steve Irwin intentionally use very, very thick accents. We sound less like those two than most people believe.

Australia was founded as a convict settlement by the British in 1788 (and no, we area’t all criminals). The native aboriginals were forced out of their lands and dominated by white man (to this day the government is still trying to settle native land rights claims). Australia is a hugely multicultural country, full of people from all walks of life and all places across the globe. Yes, the Australian accent is different to most, and some find it hard to understand, even fellow Australians can sometimes misunderstand each other, but it is not as bad as some films depict.

------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to hear about you guys:

e.g. in Germany, everyone doesn't have blue eyes and blonde hair

e.g. in Bosnia, not everyone's an idiot... it's just that we have a poor ambassador among us

Hehe I guess it's just the things I've seen in some movies (mostly made by Australians :wallbang: ), and the things that the tourist industry tries to capitalise on the most. For a more realistic Australian accent, listen to Nicole Kidman and Mel Gibson's interviews (not in movies where they make the poor Aussies fake it). Russell Crow's real accent is actually considered quite thick.

    The danes (Denmark)

We do eat other foods than bacon.

No, our country is not the capital of Sweden.

No, our country is not the capital of Norway.

No, our country is not the capital of Finland.

We don't speak swedish with a funny accent, we speak danish.

And one for Ian - No, we don't use socialism as a religion.

And one for GOAT - No, we do not all own a cell phone. ;) Same goes for our scandinavian neighboors...

Okay, maybe you misunderstood me, I didn't mean that you used socialism as a religion, I meant that socialism was equivalent to a national religion in terms of it's acceptance in Denmark...

    In Hong Kong....

Not many people really know kung-fu, not for street fighting anyway

Cantonese is the most common spoken Chinese dialect here, but Mandarin is on its way up though (so when you see Lara the tomb raider boarded a little boat in HK and she started to speak Mandarin to the boat people, it's all crap)

We are still pretty "free" even after 1997 when China took us back from Britain.

For some reason, many people I've met here in the U.S. are surprised when they find out that Egypt is in Africa.
 where else? Asia? Europe? I guess they'd probably think it's in the middle east or something...

That's not true, you do all have cell phones, I just heard there are now 4 million cell phones in use in Norway, while the population is.. *drumroll*.. 4.5 million. If you exclude kindergarden, everyone's covered.

    Myths about Poland..
    > Everyone drinks a lot, big vodka culture : no wait, that's no myth :groan:

    Myths about Norway..
    > Not everyone wears Drillo's boots
    > Norway is more than mountains and fjords, we do have cities too (not many though)
    > Running into a moose is not a daily event
    > The temperature goes down to -50 deg C every winter

    Facts about Norway..
    > If possible, we'd love to stay isolated like Switzerland cause everything we got is better than the EU says; food control, immigration laws, trade agreements etc
    > The temperature goes down to -30 deg C every winter

I think that Gray fairly well covered the myths about Australia, so I'll pick another...

    Myths about Catalunya
-Yes, we speak an entirely different language, it's not just Spanish with an accent...
-Yes, we have our own flag and we are a semi-autonomous region...

    Myths about France
-No, not all french are arrogant jack-ass's, just some
-No, not every meal has cheese and wine in it
-No, wine is not given to infants and todlers (but all others are fair game)
-No, not all french women don't shave
-No, France is not Germany's "*****"
-No, not all french hate America
-No, not all french smoke and have tons of casual sex
-Yes, the government is as ineffectual as you think, if not more
