The attitude and personality of a player makes a lot of difference to me, when I am deciding whether he is, to me, a true Great, or just an ultra talented pigfucker...Certain egocentricities can be acceptced, even glorified, especially as a lot of geniuses, in all forms of Art, have been, and will continue to be savagely temperamental, uncontrollably wild, predictably vicious...
Some examples...
Cristiano Ronaldo. No doubt whatsoever that he is one of the most talented players of the world right now, and has been for several years. But he is not a true Great to me, because he has that seemingly typical portuguese trait of arrogance, that i have seen in portugese people I have met, and in their football team. generalization, for sure, but everyone forms their opinions of other countries, of the general traits which can be found there. And there are general traits, in cultures and bloodlines...The italians, especially the southern italians are far more likely to be hot blooded passionate madmen, than their anglo counterparts. the germs or germans, whatever term you are more comfortable with, are less open emotionally, more machine like, bloodless...Anyway, Ronaldo's blood and upbringing is no excuse, but its a reason, as to why he is insultingly arrogant. And for my money, not one of the True Greats.
Eric Cantona...Extreme talent, poetic manner of playing the beautiful game, intense, deep, and prone to violent outbursts, but for me, one of the True Greats. His eccentricities, mainly anger and rage, did not devalue him, at all, to me, as a man or footballer. Whether you saw him as arrogant of not, which can be traced to his french roots, i saw him more confident, and I loved watching him play.
Zidane...Algerian intense blood, with a tough marseille upbringing. Sublime talent. Composed himself impeccably, for the majority of the time, as well as regularly captivating the global football viewing public. But...he was prone to violent outbursts, like Cantona. I don't mean solely the headbutt on that swine Materazzi, I mean other occasions...at least twice for example, I saw him stamp on opponents who were on the ground. Still, a true Great...his 'flaws' like Cantona's 'flaws' to me, were manly flaws.
Perhaps it just falls down to the fact that I hate arrogance. And I respect Masculinity, when it shows itself in the Right manner.
Del Piero...a true great. definitely less talent than the others above, but his professionalism, decency, dedication, fairness, and consistency, mark him out as a legend, to out club, and to italian football in general.
Rooney...he is far closer to being a true great than Ronaldo. because he loves football, more than he loves himself. He has thug in his character. A lot of thug actually, and is physically and mentally geared more towards being a Sissoko or Montero, than an extremely talented forward, capable of creating as well as finishing, from all over the final third...
Yes, I see Juve as a team who have had very few swine in the ranks...but Moggi was hardly an honourable man...And I remember Moller regularly puffing out his chest, with his hands on his hips in a stance of pure nazi defiance...or have I imagined that memory????? Maybe it was a dream.
Yes, generally speaking, we have a decent club. Full of players who comport themselves more honourably than their counterparts at SOME other top clubs.
Manchester United are another one of this ilk, as are Barca, and in the past Milan. They are spoiled by their owner.
My other team, Gillingham, is another team of honourable folks, the manager sets the example for the team, and it shows in the increasing sense of family and togetherness which is flowing through the squad...I was so proud of him last season when a player who had left the club, made some comments about the Gills in the paper, about Stimson (the manager) and Stimson responded, live on TV, by saying something like...
'things like that should be kept behind closed doors. Where I come from, if you have a problem with a man, you say it to his face...its about respect. So rather than play his game, i will instead ask him to pay me a visit, and discuss this in person...'
Again, others may see that as thuggish, but that kind of attitude endears the man to me. As his point was valid...A player he is completely stragith with, smiles like a girl, then runs off, tells the press a different story. I hope Stimson gets him...hohoho!
BUT...i am being subjective. Other people might have hated Montero, though Nedved was less than honest, at times, despite how much we all adore him, and see Trez as a winging wannabe, who has never proven himself at the truest measure of a player, at international level...Its all down to the individual.
