We never bought him with the intent of building a team around him. Once he was here we decided to try and do that, and that's where we and he failed. We changed our entire system to play around Diego but we didn't give him the support he needed, with the quality of players around and in front of him. Under those circumstances, even Ronaldinho would've failed.

That's irrelevant. We still fielded (and changed to) a formation around him.

We've had the great Marchisio, the great Caceres at fullback who everyone seem to have adored, DP and Trez, etc. We weren't an excellent squad, but still a decent one.

We simply misjudged him.

How is it irrelevant? Isn't that the reason Vucinic, Elia, Giaccherini, Vidal and Pepe are here? To play to a specific formation? Diego was always going to be a player who plays in the hole and we did not account for that after the six years of very successfully using the 442.

Being misjudged and failing at a team are two very different things. Any player, anywhere in the world will fail if faced with similar circumstances at Diego faced here. Diego and Del Piero hardly ever played together. Trez was injured for the longest time in that season and it was Amauri and Iaquinta that Diego had to deal with. The minute he was allowed to play his game focussing only on his role he ws a different player.

I still think had we persisted with the 4231 that season, most here would have a very different opinion of him and that team as a whole. Because like you said that squad was decent enough and didn't warrant seventh place.

Diegoal gave some kind words about Juve to Italy media after today match against Lazio. Class guy.

Tried to translate it from Italian with the help of google translate of course.

"Juve are doing very well - he told Mediaset Premium. They are a great team. What they are doing now is normal, just we could do it before. However i'm happy at Atletico and I hope that Juventus can do such great things as we are doing."

Don't be silly, he's obviously talking about his club success in Europa league. I know, this competition is not worth of Juve, but this guy at least shows respect to the club that got rid of him without any respect.

It's sooooo big difference of class between him and Melo.

I always liked Diego he worked hard for us and was unlucky to join us at a time where we were the worst we have ever been... god help any man that has to play behind Amauri and Iaquinta and supported by players who couldnt pass to save their lives.. grosso, zebina, sissoko and Melo all playing around him and with such high expectations from our fans that year and no real manager he was always destined to fail. My last memory of him with us is from a game in the europa league pre season in some of the worst conditions ive ever seen in a football match and he gave his all.
