If all options suck, better not buy anyone.

As for Forlan, yes he is OLD. I can't believe how they are talking about youth policy, reducing average age and wage then building our attack by picking up 90's all-stars.
I'd rather sign someone and get to CL than not sign anyone at all and languish in the EL... Considering what we are facing now, its time for some band-aid before the fix...

What will happen if we pay 15 million, he fails and we miss CL? We won't be able to sign proper players in summer.

We'd be lucky if we are even able to get Forlán in January at this point.

Beggars can't be choosers.

Forlan could not do any worse then iquinta or amauri. He really can't do any harm. Please bring him!!!!!
His miles better the your current attackers. His age wont matter cause his still psychically fit (more then a lot of youngsters this days) and can pretty much guarantee you a CL SPOT.

I would love to see Forlan in Serie A,even if its with you tossers :D

Right now I'm afraid we are, Rami.

We simply can't afford not finishing in a Champions League spot in the league this year, even if somehow we have to overpay in January. Not getting in Champions League would cost us much more than that.

Whatever we do or whoever we sign, there is absolutely no guarantee that we will achieve a top 4 finish.

Forlan might increase our chances somewhat, but for once I'd like it if we looked a bit further ahead. This short term thinking is hurting us more & more with each passing month.
Adding another 30+ year old striker (for whom we'd have to pay big wages & a transfer fee) is bad business, no matter how you look at it. Especially if you consider that, a few months ago you had a player in the team that would increase our chances just as much as Forlan would.

No player can really guarantee that for us, true, but we at least have got to take chances. This winter mercato is do or die for us this season. The probability of us finishing in a Champions league spot in the league this year is bigger with Forlán than without him.

I never implied it will be good business, especially considering long-term, but I feel it's a chance we can't afford not to take if we want to save this season.

The bolded part is one of the biggest mistakes the club has made after Calciopoli, but what's done is done.

What is done is done, I agree.

But trying to fix one mistake by committing another one is just insane. Might as well just throw the money in the Po.

Yeah, but this is about more than money, it's about regaining our reputation and stature.

Since we came back from Serie B we've been terrible (ecepte for the first season) and we're losing our reputation and stature, in turn losing our attractivness to great players.

This season is only adding to last years damage. WE've lost 4-1 at home to Parma, we couldnt get a win in the Europa League, we're struggeling to get 4th place... if we miss on the CL again this year perhaps the damage wont be able to get undone. good player woud choose us, a team thats in crisis for a few years, missed CL two seasons in a row, who's biggest ambition is to get a CL spot... this would mean we'd have an even harder time to get to our old stature and reputation... we would be a fallen giant whose fans only have history. You can say it's impossible but it has happened and it does happen.

Therefore, we desperatly need great players who can improve the team even if it means makng a financial loss on them.

I'm not really disagreeing with what you're saying, but spending 25 or so million (transfer fee + wages) on a 30+ year old striker is bound to hurt us in the long run.

I know that we have to look at the short term as well, but let's not make decisions that could very well screw us up for another few years.

I agree, but what other options do we have on the mercato?
Shirley, that depends on the available funds. But in (the unlikely) case that we would be able to afford Forlan, I'm quite sure that there would be other possibilities as well.

And if there really are none, it's still better not to make a move than to make the wrong one.

But why are we even discussing this? We'll probably get a player no one is happy about anyway :D
