Capello reinvents midfielder Mutu
Saturday 13 August, 2005
Fabio Capello is reshuffling his pack ahead of the Trofeo Berlusconi and could use Adrian Mutu in a new wide position against Milan.

“This will be a real match and much more than a summer friendly,” commented the Coach ahead of Sunday’s clash at the San Siro. “It’s an important trophy and both teams will play with the right level of intensity.”

The Bianconeri beat Inter 2-0 and were defeated by Napoli on a shoot-out in last night’s Trofeo TIM, but the games were notable for the successful experiment of using Mutu in Pavel Nedved’s usual wide left position.

“I settled in well on the left side of midfield and did what the Coach asked of me,” explained the former Chelsea striker.

“I have been training hard for the last six or seven months and finally start to feel on form. My legs are beginning to get match fit and I’m improving with every game, so at this point I am confident it’s going to be a great season.”

The Romanian joined Juve on a free transfer in January after Chelsea fired him for failing a routine drugs test. The Premiership outfit has demanded £7.5m remuneration for breach of contract, but Mutu’s appeal will be heard by the TAS tribunal in Lausanne on October 24.

Another player out of position who is going to underperform and complain about not getting a real chance. Meanwhile the fans are gonna bag on him for not playing as well as he can in his real position.

And Mutu isn't Zalayeta, Cap may have told him this is just a one off but if it becomes a trend, he's gonna start complaining, I just know it.

Meanwhile we can just forget about seeing the "old" Parma Mutu we all want to see.

Mutu does have the pace to become a good winger, but it will be wasting a lot of his quality. He scored 21 goals in his last season with Parma, would you waste that just to play 4-4-2? A trident attack is a must in my opinion, especially if Cassano joins.

Personally I think he'll do quite well in that role. I'm sure that Capello will allow Adrian more creative freedom than he normally does with his wide players, he won't be an out and out left winger anyways.

nah, he's gotta be played either behind the top two or as support striker. I can't see this being permanent.. we should have just shelled out a few mil for Pires if we wanted another winger.

i dont think capello fill finalize his tactics until the cassano issue is revolved.if he is signed, then mutu cud well be moved on the wing,if he isnt,he wud play alongside zlatan and trez.
either way,i think juventus will have a trident upfront this season.

I reckon Capello will use Mutu similarly to how Trapattoni used Del Piero. Wide on the left so that he can help out defensively and give the team more shape and balance but with freedom to come central and push forward as a support striker or trequartista. I would simply play a trident attack but it could be worth trying as Mutu certainly has the required characteristics: pace, passing, crossing, dribbling, creativity and obviously an eye for goal.

Mutu posesses all the qualities to succeed at a left-wing position, including good speed, fantastic ball control, incisiveness, and above average passing. When he played for Parma Mutu would drift out wide left very frequently, as he seems to love that corridor of the pitch. The only question I have about Mutu playing left-wing is his defensive ability, something we have to worry about in our straight 4-4-2 system. Other than that I think it might be a good idea, perhaps even better than the Nedved option.

I agree, I think he will not be your traditional winger, he will not be the run down the wing and cross it, he will cut it inside and shoot far post.

Don't knock the stratedgy before you know how it plays.

Andrew, you are in the America?

nedved always cuts in and often its like he plays behind the forwards anyway. with this system, our form of attack is from the wingers and often we see camoranesi also drifting through the middle.

To me, this is just a trial...Mutu will be a midfielder, but he will play behind the forwards with emerson and vieira behind him. Zambrotta owns that left wing and IMO Mutu will be our playmaker.

Whether its a 4-4-2 on paper, Mutu is always going to be behind those strikers if he isnt played upfront.

You can't assume that Zambrotta always covers the entire left flank. Some opponents are strong on the right, so besides Zambrotta the left midfielder also has to do some defensive tasks. Mutu isn't suited for that at all.

delpiero would be a better winger than mutu. not faster but atleast he has played there before. and he performs well. plus mutu can actually be useful in a goalscoring sense.

I think Mutu will score anyway, hes got a fine eye for goal. As the match progresses, he'll drift further in. Its a versatile option imo.
