Here's my honest opinion on Del Piero.
I feel that he is still a high-quality player, but he's not one of the best in Serie A or in the world anymore.
Age, injuries (especially) look like they are beginning to take their toll, especially since Serie A is a very physical league.
Is he an asset to this team? Of course, but for the future of the club, he may be more of an asset as a sellable commodity on the transfer market.
Juve always needs to keep an eye on the future, as this club is lacking depth and youth in several key areas, most notably central defense, right back, and an eventual successor for Nedved.
It makes sense to Juve to make a move with him, and who knows, maybe deep down inside, DP would welcome a change to a less rigorous leauge such as the EPL or La Liga in order to extend his career.
Alex will always be a member of a great lineage in the last 20 years of players who have worn the jersey, but like Rossi, Platini, Baggio, Vialli, Zidane, they all moved on, and Juve always found players to replace them.
I think that a big reason for the passion that a lot of you have, and please don't take this the wrong way, for it's not meant to be degrading or condescending, is that a lot of these people here on the forum are young, and DP may be the reason that you became a Juve supporter in the first place, and seeing him go would be terrible. I don't blame you.
But for the benefit of the club, there may not be a better opportunity to secure the future of this franchise for the next 6 years. Juve, for better or for worse (I feel, for the better) operate under stricter financial guidelines than some of the other large teams in the world, so they just can't go out and buy whomever they want and not worry about their books. Just take a look at what may happen to some of the other Large teams in serie A such as Milan, Lazio, Inter, and especially Roma, who may be in very deep financial trouble if the EU intervenes as is rumored.
This team never goes out and spends money extravaggantly without giving something back in return.
Example- Zidane, turned into Nedved, Thuram, and Buffon.
There's my 2 cents, don't spend it all in one place
