Capello su Del Piero: "Certe cose non andavano dette"
29 05 2005

Can someone close this, I mean, this has obioulsy close the oririnal topic, I think everything alse could be pass to the Del Piero thread

He said that certain things shouldn't have been said (by Del Piero), but everithing has been clarified, because them (and someone else) have talked about it and DP said he didn't mean what the jouralists wrote

EDIT: and of course he said he has not preferences nor problems with his players

Del Piero isn't the player he once was and surely won't regain the form that made him one of the world's best in 1998, but he still makes crucial contributions even if many would like to ignore that fact. He has had his ups and downs this season but without him we wouldn't have won our 28th Scudetto. Does that mean we shouldn't sell him though? I think not. I love the man to death and have infinite respect and admiration for him, but an offer of anything in excess of 15m would be too good to turn down IMO. Ibrahimovic is developing into one of Europe's best strikers and there's no doubt that the likes of Fernando Torres, Antonio Cassano and Carlos Tevez have the talent to be just as good if not better than DP. If however, Alex does stay, I'd be glad to spend the 30m Cassano would cost on players who would make more sense economically and ensure that we're covered in all areas.

To sum up all of that I would rather keep Del Piero and get two or three quality players than sell him and buy Cassano for a huge transfer fee when there are other positions that should be accounted for first. If the sale of Del Piero could bring in 15-20m then I would go for Cassano who at this stage is superior to Ale (performance wise anyways).
what del piero is doing is just not enough

Eeeeer... exactly. Zlatan is currently better than Del Piero, and by a country mile at that.

Zlatan, we can discuss like this for hours...but let me be straight about this, facts and statistics will I hope show you something,
Del Piero scored not just 16 goals for us as you said, without any asist,he scored from the time he joined us
-122 league goals
-39 C.L. goals
-11 Coppa goals
=172 goals at all

and he need just 6 more to equal the number of 178 which represents our top goalscorer ever Giampiero Boniperti....so that makes Del Piero legend....you can't compare him with some zlatan.

You have to agree over that.

Yeah, good for him. But that's the past, and I don't care about it, as past achievements wont bring you future success.

And why the hell did you bold the piero part in Giampiero's name, like that proves Del Piero is a good player??? Ridiculous.

That is just an analogy, you know well that I didn't do that for the purpose you mentioned.

I don't need to bold someone's name to show you that Del Piero is a great player. If you don't see that without it you are blind.

Perhaps not for everyone, but I think his efforts this season have been respectable. Please note that I'm not comparing what he has done to what Zlatan has, but he has in actual fact been our top goalscorer in all competitions this season and his goals have won us crucial games. He scored something like 9 game winning goals in the league and 1 in the CL. He came up big against Milan when he was really needed and let's not forget that Capello has been everything but favourable towards Alex. I'm not making excuses, just stating that his season might not have been what it was if he wasn't replaced even when he was playing well. I agree that there is room for improvement, but IMHO Del Piero did an acceptable job this term. If you're looking for a man to carry the team on his shoulders then DP isn't that person, but he can still make sizeable contributions.

really? tell that to those who think he is as good as 1998.

We all saw what Zalyeta did when he was given his chance. i can only wonder what would have happened if Di Viao was allowed to start after that Milan game last year. del piero recovers and di viao back on the bench.

this isnt only about del piero's contribution, it is also about the lack of chances that others who at the moment looked like could contribute more than mr. ale got.

I for one have never argued that Del Piero is as good as he was in 1998 because he is quite simply not near that level and I don't think he'll ever get back to that level. Whenever someone is arguing against Del Piero they say that his best is behind him, which I agree with, but it isn't fair to talk about the lack of opportunities Di Vaio or Miccoli or Kovacevic received because that is also in the past. Alessandro hasn't kept anyone who could have contributed more than he did out of the team this season so that's a non-point.
