Trezeguet: We Showed Character

Juventus striker David Trezeguet scored a brace against Livorno during his side's 3-1 win on Sunday evening in the 20th matchday of Serie A.

The Amaranti seem to be Trezeguet's favourite target as the Bianconero attacker had already scored a hat-trick against them in the first round.

"I feel fine," declared the French striker at the end of the game. "Against Livorno we have offered a game of character and we have won three important points for the standings."

Trezeguet hailed the performances of goalkeeper Belardini and attacking partner Del Piero who gave him a great assist for his second goal of the night.

"The second goal was very nice; me and Alessandro (Del Piero) have a good understanding. Belardini gave a very important contribution."

Trezegol's main thoughts now go towards the second leg of the Coppa Italia against Inter.

"We must recover because on Wednesday a great game awaits us," concluded Serie A's top goal-scorer.

That was some amazing team work by Palladino, DP and Trez. The most beautiful thing about the goal was Trezeguet's awareness, he was the ball was going for DP and he immediatelly started running inside, DP followed the play and made a sublime pass for a freaking amazing volley to end it! That was some amazing football.

Trezeguet: «The team really wanted this win»

When he meets teams from Tuscany, David Trezeguet lets loose. Empoli, Siena and Livorno are among the French striker's favourite victims. And there was more confirmation of this tonight at the Picchi. Two more goals - taking the tally scored at the ground to five -, after the hat trick he got at home.

These last two goals were truly memorable. A quick shot from a long Zanetti pass (he was fantastic tonight) and a volley after a one-two with Del Piero. Juve began running again and got their first League win in 2008, while Trezegol got his top scorer position back: «In the first few games of the new year I suffered a bit due to having trained so hard during the break. Now I'm feeling better and I just need to keep going like this. We're happy, we wanted this win and we were able to get it thanks to our character. Belardi did well, his contribution was important, he deserves this victory. The understanding with Del Piero? We've been playing together for years; we understand each other effortlessly, both on and off the pitch».

Domenech: Trezeguet Can Say What He Wants In an interview with L'Equipe, Raymond Domenech hit out at Juventus forward David Trezeguet in what is yet another chapter in the stormy relationship between the two...

L'Equipe today published an interview conducted with France coach Raymond Domenech, in which the manager once again touched on his love-hate relationship with Juventus striker David Trezeguet.

The player's ire was drawn by his "humiliation" at being involved in an 'A' international against Slovakia late last year, when a team of fringe players laboured under the challenge of their Slovak counterparts.

With Domenech set to select an 'A' squad once more to help him round out his squad of 23 for Euro 2008, sparks could fly with Trezeguet once more.

Domenech said, "He was humiliated? That's his problem."

L'Equipe asked if it was also Domenech's problem, as he needed his player to do well in high-level matches.

"No - my problem is to make a selection," insisted the manager.

"He does and says what he wants. It doesn't bother me. I understand that, at the age of 30, this kind of match isn't great. But I explained to him that I wanted to see how he reacted when there was competition for his place.

"Let's not forget that he had just come out of a season in Serie B. This allowed him to play a higher level match with us."

(Trezeguet later told the press that he didn't see the point in 'A' internationals, asking if playing in front of a couple of hundred fans was really befitting of top-level players.)

L'Equipe would not give up their line of questioning, asking whether or not the French team played differently with Trezeguet, and if the coach could ignore his statistical record.

He responded, almost sarcastically, "Yes, in Serie B?"

The paper pointed out that even in Serie A, he was performing well.

"Circumstances may see him reinstated to the squad at any time," conceded the boss.

"At other times, other choices will be better. There's nothing definitive in football. You can't say 4-4-2 can be this way but not that. I don't know myself. I don't know the exact science. I'm not a journalist!

"I can't judge a player permanently. I say to myself, could this player be useful to this time, right now, according to my criteria. I have no full explanation. I just say, this is how it seems to me. Other trainers may vary."

Moving on to discuss other topics, Domenech admitted that selecting his provisional squad that will be narrowed down for Euro 2008 is quite a challenge.

"I finish each weekend with a huge struggle after seeing so many matches. I want as much information as possible so as not to be deceived.

"The 'A' squad is something like this: I've seen the greatest players, but there can only be 23 at the end. I will see exactly who the group's winners are when I see them in a high level match.

"In general, [having more candidates] is not reassuring. When you have 35 potential players, you can't have 35 global stars. Yes, there's more choice. But some are young. Will they be ready? I have six months to find out.

"We need to strike hard. There is no guarantee for anyone. We'll make an efficient list for the Euros, and also look ahead a bit to World Cup 2010 qualification."
