I’m surprised how well the Brazilian teams are doing, not just the results but performance wise. But maybe I shouldn’t be.

I think a lot of it has to do with how much money some of these clubs have now. The last 6 Libertadores were won by the Brazilians with 4 of those 6 finals being all Brazilian. Because of money they’re also able to hold on to better players who would otherwise leave for Europe. Obviously not the top top players like Vini or Raphinha, but certainly better talent than maybe a decade ago.

They'll probably make more money participating, getting 1-2 wins, and advancing to the 16 and QF than they'd get in a year of the Brazilian league.

A lot of the smaller, non-European leagues should rightfully be treating this competition as a massive means to producing revenue AND showcase their players for transfer purposes.

Definitely. But I’d argue not just the non-European teams should take this seriously, there’s more money to be made here than, in our case, winning Serie A. If this is correct we should put in the effort to go as far as we can.

Prize money based on performance

Group stage (three matches) = USD 2.0 million win/1.0 million draw per club
Round of 16 = + USD 7.5 million per club
Quarterfinal = + USD 13.125 million per club
Semifinal = + USD 21.0 million per club
Finalist = + USD 21.0 million
Winner = + USD 40.0 million
Money paid to each team for qualifying

Europe = USD 12.81-38.19 million *Determined by a ranking based on sporting and commercial criteria
South America = USD 15.21 million per club
North, Central America & Caribbean = USD 9.55 million per club
Asia = USD 9.55 million per club
Africa = USD 9.55 million per club
Oceania = USD 9.55 million per club
