I saw a clip once of a PL scout talking about how they evaluate strikers. Basically if a player has a high conversion rate on limited chances during a season it most likely is a fluke season/ they are over-performing. Strikers creating or having a lot of chances shows a consistency in the player's movement and understanding of the game, regardless of the conversion rate.
A good example is Dzeko who missed a lot of sitters his first season in Roma, but his movement was so good he would continue to create chances and in his 2nd season he turned it around.
Ronaldo has always wasted a lot, but his movement is so insanely good he will get enough to score. In Real he got 8-10 chances a game, an attack with much more creativity than ours, and he scored 2-3. In Juve he gets 4 and scores 1. Very few players have the ability to even get to as many chances as Ronaldo.
So basically we can rely on a Higuain type, who is a better pure finisher but doesn't have the athleticism and understanding to create as many chances. If he gets 1 or 2 chances and doesn't score he's most likely done for the game. Or you can chose a Cr7 who if he misses those 1 or 2, will get 3 more chances and still win you the game.

I think Ronaldo and anybody who scores tons of goal is kind of "wasteful". You have the name, you will be kept way better than that 15 goal scorer. If you're trying to score a header in the box example while being surrounded by 2-3 other players, while being kicked, scratched, people are trying to shake your balance and so on and if you somehow make yourself available after all of that, that chance isn't "easy" as when you would be that 15 goal scorer because you'd have way more time and space to do things. That's one of the things why that conversion rate is almost always higher on those "back up" strikers than the actual ones.
