Messi in 2014 was more important for Argentina than Modric for Croatia this summer (and we argued here about Messi getting the WC best player award undeservedly, since he produced very little after the group stage), yet he wasnt favorite for balon dor. excluding the world cup, would you say Modric in 2018 had a better year than Messi in 2014?

Messi in 2018 was better than Modric in 2018. It’s very simple a team with Messi any year is a better team, than a team with Modric.

Messi was injured half a season in 2014 for Barca. Tata Martino even subbed him off against Atletico in CL midgame. I dont think Messi influenced Arg much. Its not like he influenced the game like Maradona or Baggio if we talk individual performances in tournaments. He might have scored against smaller sides like what was it Iran and Belgium but went missing against Netherlands and Germwny. People rave about Higuain but why didnt Messi take things into his own hands like he does at Barca? Why didnt Messi just go and score individual solo goal? If im correct germans manmarked Messi and largely killed his presence. The most important players for Argentina that tournament were Mascherano and Garay. Mascherano was immense in midfield and Garay calvanized the defense.
Lets not forget Messi was the reason Tevez didnt play that World Cup. Maybe if Tevez plays instead of Higuain Arg win WC?

It almost seems like FIFA and France Football don't want Ronaldo to have one more individual award than Messi.

Why does anyone care about Ronaldo not winning Balon d'Or? Ronaldo wasn't even a Juventus player. Why are y'all butthurt about him not winning individual trophies for what he did at Real Madrid last season, including almost singlehandedly knocking us out of CL, and embarrassing us in Turin.

Sure, there could be an argument made that he was the best in club football last season, by some margin, but there can also be argument made for Modric, as he was a huge part of Croatia's success and big part of Madrid's as well.

Strange to be upset about this as a Juventus fan.
It's not so much about Ronaldo winning it or not. It's about Modric not deserving it all.

Ffs, the awards have been a joke this year. What the fuck is Mbappe even doing there?

I´m happy for Luka, but Modric wan´t even among the best ten players of the year.

Anything other than CR7, Messi and Salah as finalists is a joke.

But I understand it. They have grown tired of the two greats.

As for you Juve fans, you shouldn´t give a shit. Who cares which team has the player that has won the trophy, when you have the one that deserves it?

At the end of the day, you are still the ones that got the beast playing for you..

Modric is better than both of them.
Madridiots are not welcome here.

Because fuckin Real takes credit for Cannavaro's Balon d'Or, that's why. We wanted to get even.

This man is involved in literally every damn goal we score in some way or another.

Also, in Italy anyway you can clearly see how he effects people around him, they pay attention to him way more than they should which opens up the game for others like Bentancurs goal for example.

Modric didn't even have that great a World Cup. I think it's very odd to pick him over Ronaldo, let alone Griezmann.

But who cares really? The only important trophies in football are team trophies.

Exactly. Modric is a great player. But to say that he was the best footballer over the past one season is quite a stretch.

It sounds more like Real Madrid purchases this years awards rights but do not have CR7 to hand it to. Hence, they decided to groom Modric and try to bring his value up.

For f-ing sake, of Modric reall was the best player, then his market value will be in the range of 100 mill or more. Is he? No.

I do believe the entire career is taken into account as well. It's not the only factor when deciding who gets the trophy, but it is a factor. So in that regard I do understand giving it to Modric.

I'm sure Michael Owen would swap his Balon D'Or for Del Piero's career. Both got serious injuries at the same age, but because Owen's best game was reliant on accelerating off the shoulder of defenders he was essentially finished as a top level player aged 24.

did they ever do that, or is it just because cr plays for juve and he only finished second? :D

let it be napuli's biggest triumph for the whole year.
