Methinks we need a some famine, war, and a few other pandemic diseases going around so the non-human animals can take back the world. :shifty:
I'm glad these tree huggers came out and showed their true colors, their allegiance is with the other species clearly, so when we go back to our normal polluting ways and winning the war against the environment, i don't want to hear any whining from the losing side.

That is true for any disease - from sniffles to cancer - by virtue of our immune system declining as we age.
The moniker "old people's disease" came out early in the pandemic when the %-age of victims, and iirc cases in general, in the 60+ group was much higher than that for younger people, especially below 40 or so yo.
As the pandemic has progressed, however, hospitals are reporting seeing more and more younger people coming in and in critical condition, needing a ventilator to survive. I think Italy was first to report that and the past few days NY hospitals have reported the same trend.
Maybe that's due to a longer incubation period in younger people, maybe younger people are more careless with their health and wait too long before they seek help, maybe it's due to just natural mutation of the virus, maybe all these reasons and many others we aren't aware of yet.

And so do 7 week old newborns in Connecticut
The very old and the very young are frail and weak. Always have been. Babies die of the common cold.

Mental numbers. And @Seven thinks this is no big deal and we should just continue on with business as usual, letting it spread freely. :lol2:

"According to an estimate by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were approximately 45 million cases of the flu in the United States during the 2017-2018 influenza season, resulting in an estimated 810,000 flu-associated hospitalizations and an estimated 61,000 flu-associated deaths"

https://cnsnews.com/article/interna...ate-45-million-flu-cases-61000-flu-associated

I never said it wasn't serious. But people really underestimate the figures of the flu. And you know why don't care as much about the flu? Because it generally just kills old people. But the flu kills the occasional young person too.

The site I quoted is a bit bullshit, but here are the CDC numbers:

I was making fun of sevens earlier remarks

I want to save as many people as possible
So do I.

Causing bankruptcies and destroying the lives of 20-40 year olds isn't saving lives. The fallout from the way we handled this is going to be huge. And to make matters worse, it's a disease that's going to come back anyway.

We have, for decades now, chosen to weaken our immune system as a species. Perhaps it's time we take a step in the opposite direction.

I left my corporate job more than a year ago to start my own company. Had I stayed I would not have any financial problems for years during the lockdown. I have invested all my savings in my company and other activities. My income is heavily dependent on the travel and tourist industries as I offer services to them.
I was expecting this year to significantly increase my income but now I will probably go bankrupt. LOL
Frankly, I do not care anymore. I will make money again. If I am going bankrupt is going to save a single life I am happy.
Do not be so materialistic.
Mother Nature needs a vacation.
Everything will be OK again.

Sigh.

This isn't about me being materialistic. In fact one of the problems I had at my old firm was exactly that they were too materialistic for my liking. I'm also one of the very few lawyers who risk almost nothing in this crisis.

But you seem to forget that this is going to cause very real human suffering. Other people will not be able to keep living in the houses they have bought or built. Some will not be able to support their families. In the EU that means poverty, but most will survive. In other regions it means famine and death.

This isn't about people no longer earning 4000 Euros and having to survive on 2000.

It's a huge thing here. Government came out with a financial plan to support private businesses but many people will still lose their job. Even with that support plenty of people are going on minimal wages which is enough to pay for the rent and 1/2 of the bills. So no 1/2 of the bills and no food. So yeah, plenty of people here will be totally fucked once we confirm 24h lockdown which would probably last for a month. But even after the disaster will continue as plenty will be jobless and won't have enough money to keep going. It's just insane. The damage here will be a lot bigger than corona.

Many more will die or become poor if we do not control the transmission of the virus. Our healthcare systems will collapse, thousands of medical workers will die. We have to flatten the curve and adopt social distancing and wearing of PPE the norm in the next several months, maybe years.
Only a vaccine or a cure will bring normality back.

Exactly.

And as soon as you raise that point, people describe you as callous and coldhearted.

All I'm saying is that maybe, just maybe, we should accept that 85 year olds die and not destroy our entire society because of this biological truth.

I honestly doubt it.

As for the medical workers, their exposure is the same no matter what we do.

A vaccine is meaningless, because it just protects us against a particular strain. It will be hit and miss, like a flu vaccine. What would help us is stronger non-specific immune system. But we've chosen to eradicate our own natural line of defense it seems. And not just now. We've been doing this for decades. No wonder we're fucked now.

Picking 2017-18 for it's higher numbers eh. lol According to the CDC there were 34,200 flu deaths in 2018-19 flu season in the US.

Latest estimates are that there will be between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths this year due to Coronavirus with current social distancing measures to mitigate it. Unmitigated, allowing COVID-19 to just spread, estimates from experts in the US, including the CDC you quote figures from are in the ~2 million deaths range for COVID-19, so maybe pipe down with the retardation about this being at all comparable to seasonal flu which we allow to freely spread through the population each year and still only kills ~50,000/year in the US. This is an entirely different animal and if we treat it like seasonal flu, it will likely kill millions according to the experts.

I'm sure you won't shut up though and will instead continue with the cringe.

Spain just passed 10,000 dead. :sigh:

It’s looking bad there today. They may pass Italy in deaths over the next couple weeks. Numbers already at 6120 new cases and 616 dead for today. :scared:
