Nice analysis, I agree with pretty much everything.
Here is (much) more....
First of all, i don't want people here to think that i agree with our transfer politics. Far from that, actually.
But i do see some logic in what we did this summer. I had enough free time to check some stats and this is what i found :
In 2004/05 (the first season when 38 rounds were played) we had a goal difference 67:27
In 2005/06 our goal difference was 71:24
Inter's goal difference last season was 69:26
And now our goal difference last season : 72:37
What can we conclude from this ?
Last season we scored more than we did under Capello, we scored more goals than Inter and we scored more than any other club apart from Roma who also scored 72 goals. But look at the conceeded goals stats.
So, i guess the board thought that we don't really have problems with scoring and creating chances. Zanetti was league's top3 assistman so there wasn't some big need to replace him.
Also, Camoranesi. I checked all the serie A matches Juve played this season. There is a huge difference between the way we played and how much we scored with him and without him. The board probably expects him to play more than last year and thus Juve to be more creative.
We did prove that we have quality to play against Inter, Milan and Roma. What we lacked was quality on the bench to give a rest to our best players or replace them when they'll be injured.
Since we play CL and since we need deeper squad to be competetive in CL and serie A, the board decided to add more depth.
With this they did a very good job. We replaced our bench players with better players. The striker Palladino was replaced with the much superior Amauri. The left wing Palladino is replaced with much superior Giovinco. Nocerino is replaced by Poulsen. In central defense we had Criscito/Boumsong in the first part of the season and we had only Stendardo in the second part. Now we have Mellberg.
We didn't even have a sub LB, now we have.
The depth is added, mission completed.
Mission number two was to make our overall defense stronger, because, from the stats above, we can see that the problem wasn't the lack of creativity, the real problem was the way we defended. The first step was adding Sissoko and we all saw that he made us stronger in this department. Poulsen and Mellberg give us great cover in case our starters get injured. They are good enough to play against the best teams and solid enough so we wouldn't have to worry in case Sissoko or the cb's get injured.
But this is where they failed : We obviously needed a new LB, a very good one and instead of making Knezevic a sub to Legro, we should have made Legro a sub for a new very good CB.
This was me trying to think logically and see why we didn't buy Xabi. Creating chances wasn't a big problem anyway but defending was. We went for the one who can offer us what we need more. Plus he was cheaper and there you go.
But i still couldn't figure it out why we didn't make the defense stronger.
With the players we have right now, and with only a new CB and LB, we'd have been a real force, imo.
Edit: In case someone calls me nuts for saying that Poulsen is what we needed while Xabi wasn't, i want to tell you that i was only trying to find a logical reason why did we go after Poulsen and not after Xabi
