Ranieri: Juve don't give up
Sunday 7 December, 2008
Claudio Ranieri hailed Juventus' hard-fought victory at Lecce as “very important” for the Scudetto and praised Sebastian Giovinco.
“This is a very important win. We knew it would be tough, but after the goal we perhaps were a little over-confident and conceded the equaliser,” he said of the last-gasp 2-1 result at the Via del Mare.
“In any case, we wanted to win and did it, even if it was at the last minute. Lecce make you suffer and we weren't the only ones who have had trouble here.”
An injury crisis ruled out Alessandro Del Piero and Vincenzo Iaquinta on top of the usual suspects, so Giovinco was given a rare start in an attacking role and scored the opener with a sublime free kick.
“Giovinco played a great game, was decisive in every part of the field and in every move,” smiled Ranieri.
“The club has been focusing on its youth team for two years now. He and the other youngsters are very strong, but clearly they cannot all get the playing time they want right away.”
The victory allows Juventus to maintain the six-point gap from leaders Inter and keeps them on level terms with Milan.
The two joint runners-up go head-to-head next weekend in what is sure to be a spectacular showdown, but Nicola Legrottaglie and Gennaro Gattuso will be suspended.
“We cannot and will not give up the Scudetto race. The pressure is on the others to win, but I repeat that I won't be happy with second place.
“Del Piero will have no problem being fit for that game. We only left him out as a precautionary measure and I'd say he'll play against BATE Borisov, too.”
