Alonso 'too slow' for Juve
Ranieri claims Spaniard lacks pace

Alonso: Too slow for Juve

Claudio Ranieri claims he did not sign Xabi Alonso this summer because the Spaniard is too slow.

Juventus were strongly linked with a swoop for the Liverpool midfielder during the close-season as the Reds became embroiled in a long-running transfer saga over Aston Villa's Gareth Barry.

The Serie A giants held discussions with Liverpool in regards to the Euro 2008 winner, but ultimately decided to turn their attentions elsewhere.

Perplexed

"He was a player we wanted," Ranieri admitted.

"But he is a player, who even though he is an extraordinary man and a great professional, left me perplexed by the slowness of his movement in midfield.

"In the midfield of Rafa Benitez's Liverpool, where all of them are little soldiers, he finds himself in a fantastic position.

"But in our midfield, he would have found it hard to support the midfield line seeing as Mauro Camoranesi and Pavel Nedved are not players that come back to give support like Liverpool's wingers."

I was just thinking, what if our performances could be measured by some stock-like index that has nothing to do with our finances, just team performances on the pitch. Right now it would probably look very similar to the US stock market. I could only imagine what Ranieri quotes would do to our stock; "We don't need to change anything," the Tinkerman says.

I mean, that is like Jean Claude Trichet coming out to say, "we will let the markets crash." Only one could imagine how far our stock would fall.

Xabi too slow? :wallbang:

We needed/still need creativity at mid and never got it. The player could have stayed on a chair for all I care. Just get those passes on target and we'll be ok but nah, Momo, Zanetti and Marchisio were not enough.

Get me some new owners, Bettega, Marino and a decent coach PRONTO!

Well in retrospect we were performing far above our real quality so someone got carried away and bought our shares and now he realises we suck and starts selling (ultimately getting us totally fucked).

I was still thinking that there's no better alternative for Ranieri right now, well until he said that Poulsen is better than Alonso, now I think even Bush will do a better job than Ranieri, he'll be out of contract in November right?

In Liverpool's last CL game I saw Alonso delievering a long pass from one end of the field to the other right at the leg of the receiver, I mean fuck this guy should consider a career in balls home delievery and Ranieri says he's not fast enough.

Xabi Alonso is too slow for Juventus. :howler:
I really thought you are smarter than this..

If you read first sentence what did he say?

CR said " He was the player we wanted"

For you and some others, story should end there because we know why we could not get him..
This way Alonso's price tag can only go down..We actually try to play similar football to Lpool or better to say, recently we don't play any kind of football, which is true..

On another line, half what he said after that is true..Camo and Nedved don't came to defensive line as much , and also we know that Nedved will hang his boots this season..Why would CR count Nedved in that case??? Does he counting on Alonso 1 year, and than he will loan him??

CR is way smarter than you think, he is just messing about, but you can translate this in your way, so you can sleep better and be justified with yourself tonight...

So Alonso's price will go down because Ranieri said he's not as fast as Poulsen. But Benitez is not that stupid, I mean he has the player at his disposal and he knows what he's capable of, and his qualities. He's not waiting for Ranieri's analysis on the player to decide his price.
If what you say is true and ranieri thinks that by what he said Alonso's price will go down then he's a bigger moron than if he just meant what he said.

Alonso is reserve, and it will stay that way. Do you think that Lpool reserve deserves amount asked for? Benitez will not play him unless players are injured, just like now.

What CR was saying, is that he is not interest in Alonso, but is he still? I guess we shall wait and see in january..

He can say positives about his player as much as he wants without comparison with other players.
He said that just to convince people that Poulsen was the right choice, and they were right to drop interest in Xabi, now after what he said you will find people saying that Poulsen "suits" our tactics better than Alonso.

first of all you got the first line wrong, it said "he was a player we wanted" not "he was THE player we wanted"

What you said about camo and nedved doesn't even make sense, ranieri was saying our wingers dont defend, but only a few weeks ago his excuse for not playing giovinco was because nedved defends more....

Alonso has started every single one of liverpools games this season, i would hardly call that a reserve, and those injurys your talking about? who got injured? Plessis and Lucas?? Liverpool's first choice midfield is:

Gerrard - Xabi
Mascherano

Benitez only wanted to sell xabi because he wanted Barry, and this comment will never put his price down thats ridiculous, arsenal will just snap up this slow midfielder and pay the required price. If anything this is going to piss Xabi off and he will reject us anyway, who would want to play for Claudio Ranieri when you can play for Rafael Benitez or Arsene Wenger??

Didn't he gave interview in English? Do you really think he knows what is the difference between "he was a player we wanted" or "he was THE player we wanted"

I have no idea if he gave the interview in english or italian, but he was in england for long enough to know the difference anyway, not that he knows what he's talking about.

And regarding the wingers tracking back, that is exactly my point, sometimes they are great defensively and other times they are crap, ranieri just talks whatever crap suits him at the time, he has contradicted himself yet again just to make an excuse about his failure to find us a good player this summer.

and this season Gerrard was injured for 1 game,he has started all the rest bar 1 when he came off the bench. Mascherano has been at the olympics so was recovering but when he has played so has alonso, benayoun has come in to sub for him along with riera. Face it, alonso is a first choice, the only reason he wasn't was because he fell out with benitez because he didnt travel to a CL game so he could witness the birth of his child. They seemed to have ironed out their differences now
