Ranieri: Serie A is ultimate test
Claudio Ranieri admits Serie A is the toughest League for Coaches, but he can handle the pressure ahead of Juventus’ clash with Napoli.
The tactician has worked all over Europe at top sides like Chelsea and Valencia, so he is qualified to comment on the problems in each nation.
“We know that there is this constant media pressure in Italy. The Coaches of Serie A, B and C could go on and work anywhere in the world, because when you get out of this 'university’ of football you can handle anything.
“Perhaps I am able to handle this pressure a little better than others because I am from Rome.”
Ranieri needed a thick skin this week after he came under attack from newspapers and club officials over whether Juve’s objective for this season was a Champions League place or the UEFA Cup.
“The club chooses its Coach and the players choose to do their job as best they can,” he said when asked why more of the squad didn’t come out to support him.
“The greatest thing is seeing the lads play, work hard and put in the effort. All the rest does not count. They are giving everything for Juventus and that is the right approach. They leave judgment to the club and that seems normal to me.”
Holding on to third place could depend on Sunday’s match with Napoli, one of the few teams to have beaten Juve this season in a controversial 3-1 result.
“I don’t want to talk about the mistakes of that day. Napoli are a dangerous opponent and my focus is only on tomorrow’s game.”
The Bianconeri have quite a few absentees for this Turin encounter, as Mauro Camoranesi, Nicola Legrottaglie and Jonathan Zebina are suspended.
Cristiano Zanetti, Marco Marchionni and Jorge Andrade are injured, so Tiago Mendes is expected to start in midfield despite his disastrous start to the season.
“He is very different to how he was a few months ago,” assured Ranieri. “He is more confident and relaxed, so I expect a good performance.”

"We had to take into account the absent players and the ones who were more in form," he explained. "I thought our formation today was the most appropriate one against an opponent which attacks the spaces well. In the first half we had some difficulties, while in the second half I asked the team to look more for the strikers and I brought in [Christian] Molinaro and [Vincenzo] Iaquinta. I'm happy about my players' performances."
On midfielder Tiago's performance, he said: "He played a very good match. He felt at ease in his position. He made many good passes, winning many balls in midfield, for me he played a great match.
"I have a good relationship with the club. Some journalists do their job, others only try to create more controversy and destabilize other teams to make the news. How can I be nervous with my team playing like this in the league? What more can a coach want? I think I'm doing my job well, the numbers confirm it."

The tactician has been under fire this week amid reports the club will fire him if he doesn’t at least achieve third place in Serie A – which looks increasingly solid after tonight’s 2-1 win over Napoli.
“I have an excellent rapport with the club and the players. There are some in the media who want to build stories on thin air, but the side immediately stood behind me.
“How can I be tense or irritable when the squad is having such a great season? What more could a Coach want? There is a fantastic rapport with everyone here and all I try to do is my job.”
It took until the 88th minute to see off Napoli after a game where the absence of the suspended Mauro Camoranesi, Jonathan Zebina, Nicola Legrottaglie and injured Cristiano Zanetti was sorely felt.
“One must always deal with the shape individual players are in when picking the team and the system. I think I made the right choices. Tiago Mendes played a great game and I think in the end we deserved the win.”
Edy Reja was disappointed to emerge from the Olimpico empty-handed after hanging on for so long and wasting good chances with Gyorgy Garics and Marek Hamsik.
“We obviously have regrets over the late goal. It’s a shame, as the lads fought for every ball tonight and deserved better luck,” said the Napoli boss.
