We keep asking a box-to-box central midfielder with more attacking upside than defensive to play a containing role in various areas, often wide, because he is willing to do it and has the stamina to do it.

Then we expect something close to his best once in a decent attacking position. Sigh.

How is Flamini very much expected to be involved with the team? Don't you think the presence of Pirlo, Pogba and Vidal - on paper a much better midfield, marginalizes Marchisio's role?

Light years ahead? But can't find his way ahead of Khedira in the German NT, which is arguably at the same level to the Italian? Quite a superlative to use.

Flamini, horrible? In Milan perhaps. Apparently, he's done excellently since he came to Arsenal. He's exactly what they needed, their fans say. Did he suddenly turn into a different player, or was it the change of tactics and colleagues that did it?

I'm going to help you draw a conclusion: Marchisio is a very good player. Not world class, not the creative spark we need in this team right now nor the physical beast that Vidal is. Therefore, he's played out of position in order to help neutralize one of the best players in the world.

Does that make him a scapegoat for last night?

Italy has guys like Montolivo and Aquilani (not to mention Astori and Ranocchia), so you might not want to use that to support your argument

Hence, Marchisio has to start for Italy given the lack of depth and quality beyond the tarting 11.

The coaches need to have a word with themselves. There's no reason to have him on the field for a team that has ambitions of competing with the best in the world. I really thought that I had seen the worst of him in that match vs bayern last season, but yesterday he hit a new low. He couldn't get close to the Madrid players and when he did he couldn't do anything. Then when we were going forward he managed to mess up everything, slow us down, can't control the ball, just a mess.

Vidal, Pogba, Llorente and Tevez showed the level of footballer we ought to have, and he showed the level of footballer we have absolutely no reason to have in our team.
