We might even win the group, but it won't change the fact that we're playing average/below average group stage matches 5 years in a row. Actually, we're doing it under both Conte and Allegri. Once we won the group in these 5 years. Once we failed to qualify. Twice, and perhaps for the third time out of five - this year we'll end up 2nd. Still, no matter the final group position and the players at disposal, it almost looks like the same team playing the same kind of football, struggling the same way, trembling till the last moment, year after year.

In 2012/13 we did win the group and we did destroy Chelsea 3:0, but we did it after previously drawing the opening 3 matches, including a 1:1 in Turin vs Shakhtar and an embarrassing 1:1 away to Nordsjaelland. Even back then we risked qualification when we played the last group stage match in Donetzk. The next year we even failed to qualify to Fenerbahce, because we couldn't beat them in two matches and because we failed to beat Kobenhavn in Denmark. In our best year, when we made the final, we trembled until the last second of the last group stage match, where we needed a draw with Atletico, after previously losing to Olympiacos and coming close to a defeat or a draw against the same team in Turin. Last year it was Monchengladbach and that defeat to Seville. This year again with the two home draws. Inexplicable.
Careful now, these toughts are forbidden on this forum nowadays.

As long as you qualify it doesn't really matter. Some might say it's good not to peak too soon anyway.

    Shame it wasn't fielded. :D

The problem is we use the same mentality in CL as we do in Serie A. Hence the problems appear in CL. However, we lack a lot of quality in midfield. Now we see how important was to keep Pogba. Pjanić may be one of the worst signings so far. So far he and Dani Alves have flopped badly. Our best signing by far and the only one who made an impact is Higuain.

@Alen If we, for example, sign Verratti in the winter mercato would he be available for CL knockout stages?

I've just watched the highlights. Higuain and Mandzukic should have burried the game in the first half. CL is not about playing beautiful football with 20 opportunities to score per game but to take your fucking chances! Same thing we failed to do during Sevilla game :sergio:

I don't understand why you're all so upset. This brings us one step closer to either (a) not qualifying to the next round, or (b) qualifying as second and being certain we'll get knocked out by whichever group winner we get in the draw.

This means our pesky little CL story ends early, and we can go back to grinding out wins against comically terrible teams in Serie A (occasionally losing to the likes of Milan and Inter, but we can always claim that it was due to a refereeing error, a poorly kept pitch, or someone having the flu) and the brain deads here can go back to saying things like "See? We win. We are God. Where are all those criticizers now?!?"

It's a win-win for everyone. Serie A is easy. Safe. We can play there forever and never have to face the inconvenient truth that we have a one-dimensional squad forged by a one-dimensional coach, and that we have gradually degraded our squad over the past two/three years to the point where we now lack the quality required to mount a serious challenge for any title other than Serie A.

EDIT: Also, Coppa Italia. We can definitely still win Coppa Italia. FORZA MISTER! DAI DAI DAI

IMO is a matter of mentality and tactics.
Along this years, we have had some interesting players, but somehow we have always managed to play weird/poorly.
With the exception of that patch after allegri´s first season when he decided to TAKE RISKS and field the 4312 against Olympiacos, and then reaching the CL final.... we have played very defensive...way too much.-..or simply playing bad.

Besides our bad form as the main factor, don't you hate the Sevilla? Last year they ruined our 1st spot thanks to that Swansea player. Without that win, they couldn't win EL to be in the same group to top us once again. Either year, we would draw with big teams in the KO stage.

No, he won't. From the round of 16 we can register maximum 3 new players who already took part in an UEFA competition in EL or CL qualifiers, but not players who played in the group stages in the same competition we were in.

For example, we can sign Witsel (from EL team), Pogba (from EL team) or Dzeko (CL qualifiers) and register them for CL, but we can't do that with players who took part in this year's CL group stages. If we sign Verratti or Matuidi in the winter, they will only be eligible for serie A and Coppa Italia.

    ?
What happened? What did Chiello have to say about Atletico?
He said Juventus don't win matches 4-0, 5-1, 5-0 etc. They pride themselves on winning 1-0 and 2-1, that's in the Juve DNA. He said a team doesn't need to win games by big margins to be successful and that Atletico is a good example of that.
