I think we looked better, because Villareal chose to sit deep with no intention to get forward and give away a counter attack as that was likely to be our main method of scoring. They weren’t forced or penned back in any way. They were happy to concede territory making us look like the aggressor.

I also thought the penalty was minimal contact and the referee didn’t give it whilst having a great view of the incident, in line with how he reffed the whole game. But wonderful VAR comes in and initially gives him a still image. In isolation not keeping with how he reffed this game, it is a penalty.
Well if you attack a team and they arent even trying counters.. It is called penned back... Villareal was surely penned back at times but it is worth nothing if we dont take advantage of it.
Maybe next year and maybe next year will be another year of disappointment...

With a better version of Arthur next year we will do well.

In my opinion, penned back is when you are forced backwards due to the opponent and can’t play the ball out. We didn’t do that, they comfortably held the ball in their own third for decent stretches and only started hacking the ball away a few times when they were winning. It was a simple tactic designed to force us forward and give them a counter attack opportunity. We didn’t bite and therefore it was a stalemate.

Just saw the highlights, seems you were the better team in the first half and should've gone in front.

Well, football is strange sometimes considering the collapse in the second half.

Hurts, because we actually were unlucky here. could have easily leade 2 or 3 after first half, things like this backfire in CL.
Also their goals - penalty, corner, penalty, total blackout by our defence, but i guess we wanted to close it 90 min too much and were to careless in defence.
I guess having 5 potential starters injured didnt help either.
Settle LB, midfield and LM spots and come back stroner next year, thats should be the priority.

It's the approach that kills us. Even when we went out to Porto, at least we battled but last night was just sideways passes. Ajax went out to Benfica after missing chance after chance, their fans know they tried their best. We couldn't beat Villarreal anytime soon unless we have our injured players back, that's the reality. With our best team we might do a 'Villarreal' against a better team which we did against Chelsea but our second game approach showed our true level.

0:3 in 2018 against Real Madrid
Who was the coach back then? Who was the coach when we lost 4:1 to RM, 3:0 and 3:1 to Barca, 4:0 to Chelsea, 3:0 to Villarreal?
The most embarrassing loses in Juve CL history brought to you by one guy...

At this level you pay for not taking your chances and making mistakes at the back. We conceded a very avoidable goal in the first leg and in the second leg again lost our concentration at the back when it mattered. That has happened to us a bit too often during the past couple of seasons in this competition.

Important that the squad doesn't dwell on this tough loss though. Just have to get your head up and continue the work that has led to this good recent form. Also I'm not a fan of players apologising the fans, just keep quiet and try to do better the next time.

I couldn't understand why we refused to pressure their GK. He was given all the time in the world to calm down, to feel in control, and then he would just start build up with a pass to the closest defender. Just a little bit of running towards him would have made him to kick it the fuck away, instead he stood there totally unthreatened all night long

Details make the difference at this level, and for some reason the details are never in our favor, which probably means we're not good enough. I don't like players apologizing, but I despise Allegri's lame ass comments and statements after humiliating losses - absolute cringe.
