They can call us defensive if they want, fact is we're winning and winning alot too. You can hardly argue with two points dropped in 13 games and you can argue even less with only two goals conceded during that period.

Juve per sempre :strong:

If you win a couple of matches 1-0, they call you lucky. When you win four straight 1-0, there's something more going on there than meets the eye.

Del Piero secures Juve triumph
Wednesday, 3 November 2004

By Andreas Alf at the Olympiastadion

Alessandro Del Piero celebrates with his Juve colleagues

A last-gasp goal by Alessandro Del Piero ensured Juventus FC qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages as Group C winners after a thrilling game with fellow European heavyweights FC Bayern München.

Buffon brilliant
Thanks to a brilliant display by Gianluigi Buffon, a single goal in the last minute secured Juve's passage as group winners but a dominant Bayern team, inspired by Bastian Schweinsteiger, will feel hard done by after creating a string of chances.

Magath changes
Bayern coach Felix Magath was forced to reshuffle his side with Brazilian Zé Roberto injured, so Schweinsteiger started at left-midfield, while Owen Hargreaves patrolled the middle with Michael Ballack. Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro returned to the European stage to play alongside Roy Makaay.

Del Piero back
Matchwinner Del Piero only recovered from flu just in time to feature for the visitors alongside Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Juve coach Fabio Capello deployed Gianluca Pessotto at right-back while Emerson and Gianluca Zambrotta returned to the starting lineup after sitting out Saturday's 3-0 Serie A win against AC Chievo Verona.

Exciting opening
The German side opened offensively, and an in-form Schweinsteiger was an inspiration from the start. It took just three minutes for the 20-year-old German international to forge the first chance, heading a Pizarro cross straight into Buffon's arms. Schweinsteiger was involved again nine minutes later, intercepting a Hargreaves cross but striking the underside of the crossbar. The English international reacted quickly and rolled the ball into the net, but referee Graham Poll called offside.

Nedved quiet
The visitors spent much of the half on the back foot, while Pavel Nedved, the man whose solitary goal settled the Matchday 3 encounter between these former European champions, struggled to create chances for his colleagues.

Buffon best
Magath's side continued use the space on both flanks and Pizarro cut in from one such run on the left only to see his angled effort saved by Buffon. The Italian international shot-stopper was called into action again on the half-hour mark when quick passing played in Makaay, but the Dutchman, without a goal in six games, was denied.

Bianconeri stronger
Juventus seemed fortunate to go in at half-time without conceding, but upped the tempo after the break, playing more aggressive football and beginning to dominate. But after Zambrotta was denied a penalty at one end, a quick break in the 49th minute gave Makaay another chance, which he squandered.

Lucio steadfast
Neat footwork by Del Piero and Nedved presented Ibrahimovic with several promising situations up front, but Bayern's strong defence, marshalled by Brazilian international Lucio, did not allow the Swedish international sight of Oliver Kahn's goal.

Cannavaro chance
A Del Piero corner on 63 minutes caused Bayern's first real moment of panic when the unmarked Fabio Cannavaro headed centimetres wide of the far post. Minutes later Bayern received a setback when half-time substitute Andreas Görlitz was carried from the pitch with a nasty knee injury.

Late heroics
Bayern regrouped and Lucio's 71st-minute shot from Schweinsteiger's assist could have broken the deadlock but rolled just wide. At the other end, Ibrahimovic failed with a 19-metre free-kick but Juve did not have long to wait for their goal, Del Piero pouncing on Kahn's parry from the Swedish striker's angled shot to pinch all three points.

That's probably the first and only time one of my local league matches drew a bigger crowd than a Champions League fixture

    Really? Awesome :thumb:

I think it won't be easy to keep out Ajax though, especially since we might not field our best 11 since we're already guaranteed a top spot in the group. I think it'd be fantastic though if Capello seized the chance to break the record and put out a strong team.

If we do manage to keep a clean sheet against Ajax, we could very well smash the record by going one better against Maccabi Tel-Aviv, who aren't exactly goalscoring machines :D

do u guys think we still need trezeguet??
Of course we still need Trez. We can't survive with such a small number of forwards, and there's no guarantees that they'll all stay in the fantastic form that they're currently in. Trez is the best finisher in our squad, and his position is IMO an essential one in any team.

I personaly dont care about the record, I'd rather lose if it could mean that guys like Bonnefoi, Tudor, Montero, Kapo or Olivera could get to play a full match.

Welcome to a sold-out Olympiastadion in Munich for the UEFA Champions League Group C tie between FC Bayern München and Juventus FC. The Serie A side edged an engrossing encounter between these giants two weeks ago, and they can seal the group by repeating the feat tonight. However, Bayern naturally have revenge on their minds.
Three points are vital for Felix Magath’s men tonight after AFC Ajax’s 3-0 win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC moved them to within three points of the German side. Pavel Nedved's decider in Turin on Matchday 3 was the first goal they have conceded in this season’s tournament, and they will be looking to put in another disciplined performance tonight.
Juve, meanwhile, have won all three Group C games 1-0, and another tonight will see them through to the knock-out stage. Such a scoreline would see them join England’s Chelsea FC as the only sides with a 100 per cent record after four games.
As expected, Brazilian midfield player Zé Roberto is missing from the home lineup after suffering concussion in the 2-0 defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. He joins long-term absentees Alexander Zickler, Roque Santa Cruz, Sebastian Diesler and Piotr Trochowski. Striker Roy Makaay will be looking to break his six-match goalless run.
As in Turin, Juve are without French striker David Trezeguet, as well as his compatriot Jonathan Zebina. But Emerson, Gianluca Zambrotta and Alessandro Del Piero all return to the starting lineup after sitting out Saturday's 3-0 league win against Chievo.
    The match is under way.
Juve kick-off and within seconds a speculative ball along the ground allows Zlatan Ibrahimovic the chance to put Robert Kovac under pressure and win an early corner.
1' Camoranesi (Juventus) takes the corner.
1' Ibrahimovic (Juventus) misses the target.
The Swedish striker meets the centre, but his header bounces wide.
3' Schweinsteiger (Bayern) misses the target.
The young midfield player connects with Owen Hargreaves' low centre but cannot get his effort on target.
3' Blasi (Juventus) commits a foul after challenging Sagnol (Bayern).
A poor challenge puts Juve under pressure as Bayern line up a free-kick to the left side of the visitors' area.
3' Again Ibrahimovic bites at Kovac's ankles and the huge home crowd gasps as it looks like he may have stolen possession. But the 30-year-old regains his balance and takes the ball back off the big attacker.
5' Emerson (Juventus) gives away a free-kick following a challenge on Salihamidzic (Bayern).
6' It is still incredible to note that the sides' previous meeting two weeks ago was their very first meeting in competitve football. Each has appeared in seven Champion Clubs' Cup finals, and between them they have won six European titles.
7' Makaay (Bayern) is flagged for offside.
    8' Lucio (Bayern) fouls.
10' Schweinsteiger (Bayern) commits a foul after challenging Thuram (Juventus).
10' Ibrahimovic (Juventus) is adjudged to be in an offside position.
11' Frings (Bayern) misses the target.
The blonde midfield player cannot keep his 20-metre strike down after Hargreaves darts past Gianluca Zambrotta on Bayern's right.
12' Schweinsteiger (Bayern) hits the crossbar.
A fabulous strike by the 20-year-old comes down off the bar but only hits the line. Gianluigi Buffon recovers just in time to get a fist on the loose ball as Hargreaves tries to head home the rebound, but when the ball is finally propelled towards the goal, the referee's assistant flags - correctly - for offside.
13' Makaay (Bayern) is flagged for offside.
13' Frings (Bayern) gives away a free-kick following a challenge on Thuram (Juventus).
    14' Camoranesi (Juventus) fouls.
15' Pizarro (Bayern) has an effort on goal.
Great work on the right side of Juve's box. The Peruvian striker steps inside Lilian Thuram's half-hearted challenge and tries to tuck it past Buffon from a tight angle. But the goalkeeper saves well to his left.
15' Buffon (Juventus) makes a save.
16' After a calm opening ten minutes, Bayern have really turned up the pressure, with English midfielder Hargreaves looking especially lively down the right. This is easily the sternest test the visitors' defence will have faced in this Champions League campaign so far.
17' Camoranesi (Juventus) delivers the corner.
17' Kahn (Bayern) makes a save.
17' Oliver Kahn's first job is to prevent Kovac's clumsy deflection from passing him at the near post.
18' Nedved (Juventus) commits a foul after challenging Frings (Bayern).
20' Frings (Bayern) takes the corner.
Out on the left, Frings only has Makaay to hit with his cross, but his centre is so accurate it forces Fabio Cannavaro to head behind.
21' Pizarro (Bayern) misses the target.
Completely unmarked from Frings' corner, the striker still cannot open his Champions League account as he heads tamely over.
21' Ibrahimovic (Juventus) is adjudged to be in an offside position.
22' A first real sighting of Alessandro Del Piero, who missed training for tonight's game with a high temperature, as the Juve captain drops deep, but he cannot escape the close attention of Frings.
24' Pessotto (Juventus) gives away a free-kick following a challenge on Schweinsteiger (Bayern).
25' Hargreaves (Bayern) delivers the corner.
    26' Ballack (Bayern) fouls.
27' Camoranesi (Juventus) commits a foul after challenging Schweinsteiger (Bayern).
27' Camoranesi (Juventus) is cautioned by the referee.
The game's first caution for the Italian stopper as he goes in a little heavy on the Bayern midfield player.
29' Camoranesi (Juventus) is flagged for offside.
30' Makaay (Bayern) has an effort on goal.
Schweinsteiger does brilliantly, doubling back from a shooting opportunity before sliding it through to his Dutch team-mate just to the right of the penalty spot. He has just a moment to press the trigger, but Buffon gets down sharply to gather at the second attempt. Makaay's wait for a goal continues.
30' Buffon (Juventus) makes a save.
30' Blasi (Juventus) gives away a free-kick following a challenge on Pizarro (Bayern).
31' Juve thread together some lovely passes down Bayern's left, but Camoranesi can't quite shape a crossing opportunity.
32' Schweinsteiger (Bayern) is adjudged to be in an offside position.
32' Ibrahimovic nips into the box, but is unable to find a way past Bayern's massed defence.
34' Schweinsteiger (Bayern) misses the target.
A speculative effort flies high over the bar, prompting derisory whistles from a small section of the home crowd.
34' More catcalls from the Bayern fans as they watch their side dally in possession in midfield and almost allow Juve to break.
    36' Hargreaves (Bayern) fouls.
36' Blasi (Juventus) commits a foul after challenging Frings (Bayern).
36' Kovac (Bayern) gives away a free-kick following a challenge on Ibrahimovic (Juventus).
The Swede's neat turn completely throws his marker just inside the Bayern half and he can only bring the striker crashing to the ground. It is right in front of Fabio Capello and he wants a yellow card, but the English official prefers only a stern word.
39' Ibrahimovic (Juventus) is flagged for offside.
The tall attacker is caught offside again. Despite the available skills of Nedved and Del Piero, Juve's only real threat has come from their skillful targetman.
    40' Blasi (Juventus) fouls.
40' Pizarro (Bayern) misses the target.
Again the Peruvian attacker tries his chances from the edge of the box, but this one causes Buffon no trouble at all.
41' Salihamidzic (Bayern) commits a foul after challenging Camoranesi (Juventus).
42' Ibrahimovic (Juventus) is adjudged to be in an offside position.
43' Ibrahimovic (Juventus) is flagged for offside.
43' Ballack (Bayern) gives away a free-kick following a challenge on Del Piero (Juventus).
The German midfielder, who has had a quiet night so far, fells his opposite number as he shapes to run all the way through Bayern's midfield. Tantalising stuff from the Juve captain.
44' Hargreaves zips past the sluggish Zambrotta before pinging another lovely cross from the right, but Cannavaro cuts it out again.
    The referee blows for half-time.
Another tight tactical affair between these ultra-disciplined sides. But with Bayern's needs the greater, the home side has been the more attacking. Buffon was the equal of good efforts from Pizarro and Makaay, while he was glad to see a rasping Schweinsteiger drive hit the bar and bounce just the right side of the goalline.
    The second half begins.
46' Görlitz (in) - Sagnol (out) (Bayern)
The Frenchman makes way for the 22-year-old at the break.
46' Zambrotta darts into the area and goes down as Kovac slides in. But amidst the loud Juve appeals, Graham Poll correctly waves play on.
49' Görlitz (Bayern) misses the target.
Pizarro gets to the by-line and pulls his cross back well. It eludes Makaay and Hargreaves, falling to the substitute just outside the box, but he fails to get his shot on target.
50' Makaay (Bayern) misses the target.
The Dutchman escapes down the left channel and shoots across Buffon, but his low strike goes just wide.
50' Frings (Bayern) takes the corner.
52' Makaay (Bayern) is adjudged to be in an offside position.
52' The visitors seem more willing to play to Bayern's high tempo at the start of the second half and have looked more threatening for it.
53' Salihamidzic (Bayern) has an effort on goal.
53' Buffon (Juventus) makes a save.
    54' Pessotto (Juventus) fouls.
55' Kovac (Bayern) commits a foul after challenging Del Piero (Juventus).
56' Zambrotta (Juventus) has a shot blocked.
The wing-back tries his luck from 30 metres after Bayern half-clear it, but his shot thunders into the crowd of defenders and back out.
57' Camoranesi (Juventus) misses the target.
Another Juve pot shot. This one from the 28-year-old midfield player fizzes just wide.
59' Hargreaves (Bayern) delivers the corner.
82-times capped Italian international Cannavaro gets the slightest touch on Frings' left-wing cross, preventing Makaay from getting a strike on Buffon's exposed goal.
60' Bayern are struggling to find the same sort of space after the break, so they will be glad to hear that Maccabi Tel-Aviv are two up at home to Ajax in the other Group C game.
61' Frings (Bayern) gives away a free-kick following a challenge on Thuram (Juventus).
62' Blasi (Juventus) misses the target.
The 24-year-old shoots from distance, but sees his attempt deflect wide.
62' Camoranesi (Juventus) takes the corner.
62' Cannavaro (Juventus) misses the target.
The defender leaps to meet the centre, but his header falls the wrong side of Kahn's goal.
63' Makaay (Bayern) has a shot blocked.
The Dutch striker volleys another deep Frings cross well, but his shot is blocked by Cannavaro.
63' Makaay (Bayern) misses the target.
From the rebound, the former RC Deportivo La Coruña man fires over.
    64' Cannavaro (Juventus) fouls.
64' Cannavaro (Juventus) is shown a yellow card.
The defender's trip on Frings earns him a yellow card.
67' As Zambrotta hits his left-wing cross, his marker Görlitz pulls up, holding his knee. It looks like the substitute's game is over after just over 20 minutes.
67' Camoranesi (Juventus) delivers the corner.
68' Ibrahimovic (Juventus) is flagged for offside.
69' Scholl (in) - Görlitz (out) (Bayern)
The sub is subbed, with the home favourite coming on, forcing a minor reshuffle at the back.
71' Lucio (Bayern) misses the target.
The defender starts the move with a strong diagonal run across Juve's half. He slides it through to Pizarro who returns the favour, but from 16 metres the Brazil international cannot make true contact and it dribbles wide.
72' Camoranesi (Juventus) has a shot blocked.
73' Lucio (Bayern) commits a foul after challenging Ibrahimovic (Juventus).
Juve win a very dangerous free-kick, dead centre on the edge of the Bayern box. Del Piero and Nedved, who have both been all but anonymous this evening, stand over the ball.
    74' Ibrahimovic (Juventus) takes a direct free-kick.
74' Ibrahimovic (Juventus) has a shot blocked.
It's the Swedish striker who takes it, opting for power but seeing his shot fly up off the wall.
74' Frings (Bayern) gives away a free-kick following a challenge on Ibrahimovic (Juventus).
    75' Nedved (Juventus) takes a direct free-kick.
75' Nedved (Juventus) has a shot blocked.
This time the Czech playmaker does take the free-kick, albeit from a much harder angle. His shot never even makes it past the penalty spot and Bayern clear.
76' Schweinsteiger (Bayern) has an effort on goal.
A half-chance for the youngster, but he fails to test Buffon.
76' Buffon (Juventus) makes a save.
76' Mehmet Scholl tries to play a one-two with Pizarro on the left edge of the Juve area. But after timing his run for the return ball, his Peruvian team-mate mishits the ball. The home crowd cry out in frustration - Scholl would have been in on goal.
78' A fantastic, bustling run by Lucio through midfield almost looks like carving Juve open, but the visitors' defence re-group just in time.
80' Nedved (Juventus) has an effort on goal.
Ibrahimovic tries to make an opening or himself, but can only dogleg the ball to the 32-year-old. Still, he does well to test Kahn at the near post with a driven 15-metre shot.
80' Kahn (Bayern) makes a save.
80' Nedved (Juventus) takes the corner.
    81' Nedved (Juventus) fouls.
82' Pizarro (Bayern) misses the target.
The 26-year-old leaps over the static Zambrotta but cannot guide Scholl's right-wing free-kick goalwards.
85' Nedved (Juventus) misses the target.
The Czech playmaker has come into the game more late on. Here he tries his luck from all of 35 metres, but Kahn watches it float wide.
86' Frings (Bayern) has an effort on goal.
The hard-working German midfielder hits the ball long into the area but no one can steer it goalwards.
86' Buffon (Juventus) makes a save.
88' Del Piero (Juventus) commits a foul after challenging Hargreaves (Bayern).
89' Makaay (Bayern) has an effort on goal.
Another lovely Frings cross, this time from the right, is nodded on by Makaay, but the Italian keeper manages to get his fingertips to it and push it over.
89' Buffon (Juventus) makes a save.
89' Scholl (Bayern) delivers the corner.
89' Lucio (Bayern) has a shot blocked.
90' Ibrahimovic (Juventus) has an effort on goal.
The tall striker does fantastically, spinning between Frings and Hargreaves, arguably Bayern's best players tonight, before unleashing his shot from a narrow angle.
    90' ( 0 - 1 ) Del Piero (Juventus) scores!
Kahn can only parry Ibrahimovic's shot, and it is just left for Juve's captain to stroke home from three metres. Once again it's 1-0 to Juventus.
90' Kahn (Bayern) makes a save.
90'+2' Guerrero (in) - Salihamidzic (out) (Bayern)
90'+2' (Bayern) gives away a free-kick following a challenge on (Juventus).
90'+2' Makaay (Bayern) has an effort on goal.
So close to another late twist. Cannavaro and Zambrotta get their wires crossed and Frings' speculative pass finds Makaay with just Buffon to beat. The Dutch striker tries to lift it past the goalkeeper, but he manages just to get the slightest of touches on it and it bounces tantalisingly wide. Before Bayern can even prepare the corner, the English referee blows for full-time.
90'+3' Buffon (Juventus) makes a save.
    The final whistle is blown.
Juve's fourth straight 1-0 win means the Italian side keep their 100 per cent record, and seal their place in the knock-out stages. Gianluca Zambrotta commented after the last meeting with Bayern that, if they defended well, Juventus were always in with a chance of winning due to their potent strikeforce, and Alessandro Del Piero's last-minute winner underlines the defender's point. Juve were willing to bring the game to their hosts more in the second half, with the result that Bayern struggled to find nearly as much space and time. Juve were, though, still grateful for Gianluigi Buffon's heroics late on.

    Capello keeps his head
    Wednesday, 3 November 2004

Juventus FC coach Fabio Capello was quietly delighted with his team's resilience as they claimed a last-gasp winner against FC Bayern München. Alessandro Del Piero swept home after Oliver Kahn could only parry Zlatan Ibrahimovic's fierce shot, giving Juventus their fourth 1-0 win in four Group D games, and sealing first place and a knockout campaign. The result means Bayern still have work to do to progress, three points clear in second place ahead of the visit of Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC on 23 November, when Juve welcome AFC Ajax.

Juve's Emerson (left) vies for the ball with Bastian Schweinsteiger

    Fabio Capello, Juventus coach
In the first 20 minutes Bayern played at high speed and with determination. They made a lot of problems for us, but we did a good job. In the second half we played well and controlled the game, but Bayern certainly had more chances to score. In the last minute Ibrahimovic showed his talent and Del Piero proved what a great player he is. Makaay could also have been luckier with his last chance. The result between Maccabi and Ajax makes us confident. We are still in the lead and that makes us happy. We reached this position because the team is hard working.

    Felix Magath, Bayern coach
We could use the same words as after the [Matchday 3 defeat] in Turin. We were strong in the beginning and should have scored at least once in the first period. But we did not, so we lost our self-confidence later in the game. Juve grew stronger in the second half, but we were perfectly capable of matching them. When it looked like a draw, Juventus scored in the last minute. We dealt very bad with a two against one situation outside the penalty area. Every player makes mistakes, Oliver Kahn and also Jens Lehmann for example. The defeat is not so dramatic, because of [Maccabi's win against Ajax] in Tel-Aviv. But we missed the chance to finish this first round as winner of the group. We still expect to reach the next round, we have it in our own hands in the next game against Maccabi. As for Andreas Görlitz, he suffered a heavy knee injury, and we will miss him for at least six months.

    Michael Ballack, Bayern midfield player
It is always hard to concede a goal in the last minute. We have created a lot of chances, but were not able to score. Concentration weakens at the end of games, but that is no excuse. Before the goal Ibrahimovic fooled two opponents - that must not happen.
