On the first point, he did really well for himself. It takes a special kind of person to thrive with that sort of attention, especially in such a passive manner.The second point kind of goes without saying. Arsenal is barely even a football club any more, it is just a tool to make money for their shareholders. They are absolutely fine getting into the CL every year.
To be honest smart athletes are often like that. Look at Matt Damon's past few weeks. The guy said nothing wrong and was heavily criticised. It's sad, but we have become a society of people who like to be offended (and try to make money out of being offended in the process). Saying cliche things or saying nothing at all is the only way to be safe for guys like Beckham.

Beck's ain't the sharpest tool in the shed, but he's not dumb IMO. I think his biggest problem is the fact he's completely uncomfortable in the spotlight and in front of camera's(ironically, looking at his life). Just look at . Overall, I feel he's a genuinely nice and humble bloke. Respect for him as a player and person.
Not really, I seen countless interviews with him throughout his career and he is never really at ease at getting the massive attention, he seems just to react like a regular guy thats not at his element in the spotlight besides being in his element on the pitch. There is very little reason to act all uncomfortable. Usually those who play quiet and simple are easier to spot.
If he really was uncomfortable, he wouldn't be in the spotlight these days. He's a retired football player who earned millions playing football and many more millions advertising his own public image. Beckham might act as if he's uncomfortable but the mere reality that he's still in front of the camera shows you he loves it.

Oh I'm not saying he is shy, dude isnt. But he is uncomfortable in terms of he isnt someone who naturally charming and outgoing in terms of how he faces it, there is media training (and he has had plenty of it), and there is personality. His is more of a not so naturally outgoing communicator, ala a Zlatan or other athletes with strong personalities (in fact he rarely shows his) who exude it every time. He barely talks or says much in comparison, not his forte. But he is still a jock, and he has been a natural star athlete for 2 decades now, so ofcourse he isnt some hermit who hides from attention. And it is his BUSSINESS to be on the limelight, more so with his wife who encouraged him since they met for sure. But mainly talking type of personality/person he is shows in public, someone who doesnt exactly know how to face the super stardom in how he engages it, more quiet besides the cues he is given.
Take Cristiano for example, he does the underwear bilboards and is media trained too, but you also see his very much enjoying the fame directly in interviews and is eager to talk about and be himself as much as is allowed almost. His outgoing attitude comes out. While Beckham allways struck me as a simple more reserved kinda guy verbally speaking, who is pretty much managed by others throughout his all around stardom. But he seems to be a good all around professional still who pretty much does alot of good will ambassador stuff due to his fame. You never hear him say anything wrong or be involved in controversies (besides rumouredly cheating on the misses lol). Fairly normal guy more or less.

He got alot of shit from footie fans because media overhyped him as one of the best due to his big brand when he was mainly a very good player with narrow skillset (insane right foot), but really when it comes down to it he is a model professional who is quite hardworking and has been a great promoter of the sport. Still continues to be after he retired despite not being involved in the sport whatsoever, which is quite admirable, more so for his consistent work for UNICEF for long time.
