KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will play host to 14 top world club sides in the Champions Youth Cup tournament from Aug 5-19.

The unprecedented football extravaganza will see youth teams from AC Milan, Ajax Amsterdam, Arsenal, Boca Juniors, Chelsea, Flamengo, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Porto, Internazionale, Juventus, Manchester United, Paris St Germain and PSV Eindhoven plus teams from Qatar and hosts Malaysia.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman said they made a bid to stage the event at a cost of £2.5mil (RM17mil).

“This is a one-year programme and we have the option to renew it,” said Azalina after the launch of the event here yesterday.

She said the event supported by the Tourism Ministry and backed by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) was being held in conjunction with the Visit Malaysia 2007.

Four groups of four teams will play round-robin matches in Alor Star, Kuantan, Malacca and Kuching with the knockout stage scheduled in Kuala Lumpur and the final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Aug 19.

Jonathan Price, chairman of the UK-based Gifted Group Limited, which is the exclusive commercial representative for the G14, said the Under-19 tournament would bring together the next generation of football stars.

“It is going to be a two-week football festival involving the world's greatest clubs and their upcoming stars,” said Price.

He said Franz Beckenbauer (Bayern Munich), Johan Cruyff (Ajax) and Zico (Flamengo) came through the ranks of these clubs to become legends and Ryan Giggs of Manchester United, Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Cesc Fabregas of Arsenal are icons that carry on that tradition today.

He said they have yet to decide on the ticket prices but promised it would be affordable.

Fears that Fifa, football’s governing body, would not sanction the tournament due to the involvement of G14 clubs (a grouping of Europeans clubs which are at times at loggerheads with Fifa and UEFA, European football’s governing body) were also dispelled.

"The issue doesn’t arise as we have already written to Fifa and AFC (Asian Football Confederation).

"We have the support of FAM and the sanctioning of a tournament by Fifa is normally two months before the event," said Jonathan Price, chairman of UK-based Gifted Group Limited, the promoters of the CYC.

CYC Will Not Kick Off Without Fifa Sanction

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Youth and Sports will not go ahead with plans to host the controversial Champions Youth Cup (CYC) if FIFA does not sanction the event.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said told Bernama today that her ministry would withdraw from the CYC if the relevant authorities failed to get the tournament sanctioned by FIFA, the world governing body for football.

"Though I have not received any detailed report from the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), the stand of the Ministry of Youth and Sports is simple. We will only recognise the Champions Youth Cup if it is sanctioned by FIFA," she said.

It was reported that after initially recognising the tournament, FIFA in an about turn had revoked its sanction for the CYC which involves 14 of the world's top clubs for the proposed Under-19 tournament to be held here from Aug 8-19.

The tournament, which is a joint effort of the Sports Ministry, Tourism Ministry and the FAM, and regarded as the biggest sporting attraction for the Visit Malaysia Year, was already gathering bad moist when the staging rights was announced as RM17 million.

However, despite much hue and cry about the whopping fee, the draw for the tournament was held last week with Malaysia drawn in Group D together with Bayern Munich (Germany), Chelsea (England) and PSV Eindhoven (Holland).

The other clubs in the CYC are AC Milan, Juventus (Italy), Manchester United, Arsenal (England), Ajax Amsterdam (Holland), Boca Juniors (Argentina), Flamengo (Brazil), Barcelona (Spain), FC Porto (Portugal), Paris St Germain (France), and a Qatar side.

It was also reported that FIFA's about turn had to do with the presence of G-14 general manager Thomas Kurth at the draw for the championship.

The G-14 which comprises 18 top-most clubs in Europe is a body that has not been recognised by FIFA or UEFA which is the governing body for football in Europe.

Ministry Has No Jurisdiction To Lobby Fifa, Says Azalina

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Bernama) -- The Youth and Sports Ministry will not assist in lobbying the president of the International Football Federation (Fifa), Joseph Sepp Blatter, for the rights to host the Champions Youth Cup (CYC) in this country.

"I'm not involved in this matter. I leave it to the organisers. Any lobbying will be done by the organisers.

"This is not within the jurisdiction of the government or ministry. We only support the organisation of the championship because of the 50th National Day celebrations together with the Tourism Ministry as we find that the program has the potentials to promote Malaysia to the world," said Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

She said this when asked whether her ministry would lobby for the championship and discuss the status of the bid with the Fifa president during his visit here during the weekend.

Azalina again emphasised that the hosting of the youth football championship must get the approval of Fifa beforehand.

"It is up to Fifa to decide, if Fifa refuses to give its approval... it's not a problem to the government.

"I understand that FAM (the Football Association of Malaysia) will make an official letter today to brief Fifa so that the world body can raise the matter at its board meeting," he said.

Fifa is reported to have withdrawn its recognition given earlier to host the CYC involving 14 top-most clubs in the world for the Under-19 youth championship, scheduled to be held here from Aug 8 to 19.

It is learnt that the withdrawal was due to the involvement of the Group of 14 (G-14) comprising 18 of the top clubs in Europe which were not recognised by Fifa nor the European Football Union (UEFA).

The tournament is a joint effort by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Tourism and the FAM with the hosting rights worth RM17 million.

MU Legend Brian McClair And Arsenal's Liam Brady To Grace CYC

KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 (Bernama) -- Manchester United legend Brian McClair and ex-Arsenal star Liam Brady are among a list of renowned former football players who will be attending the inaugural Champions Youth Cup (CYC) as ambassadors of their respective clubs.

McClair, who secured his place in Old Trafford's history books when he became the first player since the legendary George Best to score 20 league goals in a season, is currently the director of the club's Youth Academy.

He will be in Malacca closely watching the progress of Manchester United's youngsters who have been drawn in Group C alongside with FC Porto, Internazionale and Boca Juniors.

His accolades include three FA Cup medals (1990, 1994 and 1996), the 1992 League Cup title (he netted the winning goal against Nottingham in the final), four Premier League titles (1993, 1994, 1996, 1997) and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup medal in 1991.

On the coaching front, after stints with Celtic and Brighton & Hove Albion, he took over the Arsenal's Youth Academy in 1996. Under his guidance the Gunner's youth sides have performed remarkably well and have won several tournaments.

In addition, to McClair and Brady, all the other participating clubs, with the exception of Malaysia and Qatar, will be led by "ambassadors".

The other former prominent footballers turned "ambassadors" who have confirmed their appearance in Malaysia are Beppe Baresi (Inter Milan), Filippo Galli (AC Milan), Amara Simba (PSG), Edward Sturing (PSV), Raul Plasmann (Flamengo), Kern Werner (Bayern), Julio Alberto Moreno Casas (Barcelona), Michaelangello Rampulla (Juventus), Giuseppe Baresi (Porto) and Frank Arnesen (Chelsea).
