Juventus 2 - 1 Real Madrid
Del Piero 6 (J), Amauri 49 (J), Van Nistelrooy 66 (M)
Stadio Olimpico, Turin
An Alessandro Del Piero stunner and Amauri header brought Juventus back to life by defeating Real Madrid 2-1!
This big match could not come at a worse time for Claudio Ranieri, who was under fire after two points from his last four Serie A games, a 2-2 draw away to BATE Borisov and with an injury list that included Gianluigi Buffon, David Trezeguet, Mauro Camoranesi, Christian Poulsen and Cristiano Zanetti. Olof Mellberg and Vincenzo Iaquinta were only fit for the bench. It was Fabio Cannavaro's first return to Turin since leaving in 2006, although he had never played at the Olimpico before.
Juve had a very aggressive start and Heinze had to dive in to clear Pavel Nedved's cross off the feet of Marco Marchionni.
They broke through moments later with a stunning goal. Amauri flicked the Claudio Marchisio ball back for Del Piero's first-touch powerful right-foot strike from 25 yards! The power of the snapshot stunned Iker Casillas, who was rooted to the spot.
Rafael Van Der Vaart's free kick skimmed the crossbar and Alex Manninger comfortably smothered another attempt from the Dutchman. Another set play was not cleared effectively, but Manninger timed his intervention perfectly to stop Sergio Ramos getting the final touch.
Amauri had a couple of chances, unable to make the most of Zdenek Grygera's cross. There was a new injury when Momo Sissoko accidentally clattered into Marchisio and the youngster was stretchered off in tears, making way for Hasan Salihamidzic and moving Nedved to central midfield.
Casillas plucked a Nedved cross off the head of Amauri from seven yards. However, Nicola Legrottaglie also suffered a relapse of his injury and was replaced by the not 100 per cent fit Olof Mellberg at the break.
Straight after the restart, Amauri doubled Juve's advantage in Turin! Nedved intercepted a weak pass down the left channel and crossed to the six-yard box for Amauri's header, which took a deflection off Heinze to leave Casillas stranded.
Real tried to fight back, mainly in the air, as headers from Van Der Vaart and Arjen Robben skimmed the frame of the goal. Manninger's palms were stung by a sudden Wesley Sneijder rocket from 25 metres, as Robben's introduction for Higuain revived the Spaniards.
Sneijder was repeatedly trying to test Manninger from distance and hit the base of the far post on the hour mark with a right-foot screamer.
A Van Der Vaart free kick was punched away by Manninger, as Real turned up the pressure. It eventually paid off, as a cross from the left found Ruud Van Nistelrooy's header into the ground. He was left far too much space for a totally free header from six yards.
However, less than 60 seconds later it was almost 3-1 for Juve. Salihamidzic skipped past Cannavaro down the right and his cross only grazed Amauri's head, then Sergio Ramos managed to clear under siege from two Bianconeri shirts.
A low Del Piero free kick was comfortably held, then Amauri went on a fine run, but went for glory rather than passing to the captain and was closed down.
Vincenzo Iaquinta came off the bench for Amari after an injury lay-off and Dutchman Drenthe replaced Van Der Vaart. Mellberg smartly intercepted a Robben low pass for Van Nistelrooy as Madrid again poured forward in a desperate attempt to avoid defeat.
In stoppages Marchionni's foul gave Real a very dangerous free kick, but both Sneijder's attempt and Robben's follow-up were off target.
