Yeah he did have amazing saves. But buffon made a miracle save when 1-0 which obviously would have changed everything about the game and tie. Buffon should have been picked imo. But it really doesn't matter in the end.

And yes, Neuer is overrated, he's talked as if he's some sort of legendary keeper already. He's nowhere near the last great german GK Kahn or Kopke. And he looks like a picturesque nazi

Retrospectively I think Khan wasn't that much of a cunt, just a guy with aggression issues. Lehmann on the other hand is a piece of shit

I remember there was a CL game around that time, i think against Mourinho Chelsea, they lost, Kahn was criticized for going down slow and bad reactions. Meanwhile Lehmann went all the way to final with Arsenal, making some 0 goals conceded record at the time in the competition. So that made Klinsmann make the decision to start with Lehmann in 2006 world cup. He was their hero against Argentina in pen shootout.

But between 98-02 Kahn was up there in the very best list. I do think decline was on from 04. Germany didnt even qualify from euro 2004 group to knockouts, while in 2002 World cup, Kahn was instrumental helping to guide that quite average German side apart from Klose to final, which unfortunately will be remembered for his blunder save.

Kahn single handedly dragged them to the final in 2002, he was that good. then in 2004 they were placed in a group with Czech Republic and Netherlands, and only were eliminated because they couldnt score a goal vs Latvia (yes, they were that shit). Neuer was never on that level, which is why i found it ridiculous that he was pushed with both hands into the balon dors top 3 in 2014

if you want to see a top GK, watch the WC in 2002. thats when Kahn was beasting

Germany lead against both Netherlands and Czechs. Ended up not winning either. Rewatch the game highlights. Against Czech imo Kahn could have done better with the goals. Against Netherlands, fair enough, RVN poacher goal.
But some other top keeper would have made a reaction save.

I dont think tough groups is excuse. Euros always had tough groups till they expanded it. Italy and Spain went also home.
