Its a question thats been ever intriguing. As mere mortals, we all want the best of both worlds, but in reality it doesnt really work out that way. So, given the pretext of our very real existence, I'd like to know what choice you would make between a career with a strong foundation and the kind of money that would bring you instant gratification, and the good life.

To give you an example: you're working in a good company that's going to look even better on your CV, but you're not empowered how you'd like to be and they dont pay you enough either. Up pops a smaller company, willing to pay you the kind of money you've always dreamed of, but the job profile isnt half as exciting as where you're currently employed. Which would you choose and why?

as long as i am able to live comfortably and provide the necessities of living then i would stay where i am.

No you would'nt able to live comfortably. Because that would defeat the purpose of this question. Well yes, you would be able to provide for the necessities, but a comfortable existence would be a luxury on the big company. And a done deal on the smaller one. So which would you choose?

As someone who's suffered from severe depression and has seen the ugly sides of life: I'd pick the job that I like best. Nicest colleagues, constructive things to do. Never mind if I don't live in luxury; I don't need it.

hmm.. I'm gonna go with career on this one.. Besides, I'm choosing my future based on the fact that I want to help people (surgeon), and not because of monetary benefits..

@Erik: Severe depression? How'd that happen?

These questions are always silly because everyone will draw the line in a different place.

From my perspective, how important is it to you the thing you do for 8 hours a day everyday? I know I would like to do something meaningful.

    Yes, surgeon.. :)

..and, I might be tempted help people 'get rid of things' by "accidentally" killing some "evil" patients, but I'm sure that won't happen.. ;)

EDIT: oh, wait I just comprehended what you meant by getting rid of things.. sorry, I'm a bit slow today..

I was advised to be a plastic surgeon, btw, but I'd rather not..

Have both so its irrelevant really...

But if you want any kind of answer... Family and friends are more important than any job or any amount of money... Rather be unemployed and homeless with good friends and a strong family than rich with no one...

but then one could then use his own truer definition of "rich" in that being rich is all about the people around you, and a happy life, not the money..

    sum'n like that..

So I'd rather be "rich" doing what i love, with good friends and family surrounding me, than "poor" with all the money I'd want..

Combination of many things, I don't like to go into it too much. Point is that I'm out of that nowadays and I do volunteer work where I help people who suffer from these problems; which is a good way to deal with it for myself as well.

Baggio, if I was single than I would pick the place I like, but if I am married or are plannin on, than I would go with the one that has better benefits. I don't think it's fair for them to suffer because of me.

I think it depends on the current situation of the person. I can sit at home without working the shitty job I am doing and concentrate on my future plans and get to achieve them faster. However, I am working as I need the income the job is providing. Had I been in another situation I would have achieved my plan in a faster way without "wasting time" working a bad job.

So all these decisions are situation dependant but in the end it all comes to what Shadowfax said, family and friends are the most important. I would add health to those as well.
