Chiellini Frustrated By Inter Form

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has admitted that he is beginning to lose faith in a slipup by league-leading Inter.

The defending champions have been in imperious form this campaign, and are yet to lose a single game in the Serie A this season. Third-place Juventus are making a good fight of things – especially considering that this is the their first season back in the top division – but the former Fiorentina defender can’t help but feel frustrated that the Nerazzurri are not showing any signs of relenting from their neck-break pace.

“It’s tough being behind Inter,” Chiellini admitted. “The Beneamata seem to be really superior.

“Just as [Roma’s] Daniele De Rossi said, it can be frustrating chasing them when they seem to win so easily.

“As far as we are concerned, we want to stay ahead in the battle for second place. Then, Inter could slip up and we would have to see.

“We need to improve our away form because we have only managed to beat Cagliari on our travels.”

Chiellini and his troops will have a chance to rectify their unspectacular away form immediately, as they travel to face a Lazio side, who have just been eliminated from European competition.

“It will be a difficult game. They have a good team with a terrifying duo in Tommaso Rocchi and Goran Pandev,” he added.

“Real Madrid was an impossible mission for them and I expect that they will climb up the League table now.”

Chiellini: “In Rome to win”

With Christmas getting nearer, Giorgio Chiellini already knows what present to ask for: a great 2007 finale for his Juventus. Before the winter break starts, the Bianconeri want to confirm the good things done in the first half of the season.

The defender spoke about all this at today's press conference, previewing the next two games, especially the one on Saturday night, against Lazio in Rome. “We have Lazio and Siena before Christmas and we want to win both games, even though we know it won't be easy. We've done well up until now and we want to consolidate our position in the League. We've got a long way to go in the tournament and we have to try and remain close, knowing full well that we have a team like Inter Milan in front of us, who have showed they're clearly head and shoulders above the rest, especially in the last few matches. In any case we're not giving up”.

The first match is in the capital against Lazio, who have just been eliminated from the Champions League. “I don't think Lazio will be demoralized or angry – Chiellini continued -, they did what they could against Real Madrid and I think the players themselves knew that winning there was going to be almost impossible. They'll be fired up and immediately wanting to fight to get to more ambitious positions in the League than the one they currently occupy. We have to fear Rocchi and Pandev most of all, as they've scored almost all Lazio’s goals, we'll have to be good to contain them”.

This is the last away game of the year: the last chance to get an away victory, after going so close recently. Chiellini confirms everybody's desire to win away from Turin again: “Apart from the derby which doesn't count, we've only won at Cagliari and we were even a bit lucky that day. We need to improve in that respect. We don't always seem to fully express our character and personality away from home, although it's true that our opponents are more motivated in front of their own crowd. That's why we're going to Rome with the intention of winning”.

Last of all, a comment on the defence: Juventus are getting better and better at the back and Chiellini and Legrottaglie in particular are truly shining - two players that ran the risk of leaving in the summer. Nicola was linked to a move to Turkey, and Giorgio also wasn't sure about his future for a short while, but quickly - and luckily! - he overcame those doubts. “I'm really happy I stayed, leaving would have been a big mistake. After what happened in July, I understood that sometimes you need to count to ten before speaking and I did wrong back then. Mistakes are useful learning tools”.

i think he has been the revelation of the season...he has neutralised the best 2 attacking players in Serie A (Ibra Kaka) with such aplomb, it has been magnificent...such an absolute natural at CB...i think he can work his way to becoming a starter for the Azzurri

We Want The Scudetto – Chiellini

Juventus hardman Giorgio Chiellini insists that the club will fight all the way to the end for first place in Serie A.

With unbeaten league-leaders Inter eight points clear of third placed Juventus at the winter break stage, many people believe that the Bianconeri are already out of the title race.

This weekend Serie A resumes after the winter break, with Juve facing a tricky trip to play Catania.

“We all can’t wait to get started. Second place is a realistic aspiration, but we can and must fight for the top spot,” Chiellini declared.

“The sides in front of us have been together for years and have gelled together over time. But so far I would give us seven or eight out of 10 and we need to get to 10.

“I would be happy if we managed to continue this pace until the end of the season but we have a great hunger to prove ourselves and we will need something extra to claw back Inter.”

Chiellini has been a complete revelation this season, since switching from his natural left-back position into the centre of defence.

Since moving into the role halfway through the week four match against Roma, Juventus have conceded just nine goals in thirteen-and-a-half league games.
