Chiellini should play at back 4. He has his moments and his form is not like used to, but I still believe he'd gain the most out of 4 man backline. Chiellini - Barzagli duo is the way to go.
:agree:

The back 3 in a 352 see way too much of the ball being played back and forth. Chiellini has never been one to ooze class with the ball at his feet. Also, the pressure people now put on our wingbacks force the WB's to play the ball back which only increases the amount of times chiellini sees the ball.

Defensive beast in what world? Why are you becoming so blind and narrow minded lately?

He's fine for Serie A where everyone will sit deep and just watch us do whatever we want, it's easy being called a good defender that way when you don't even sweat. Since we've been back playing European Football, every chance he had he disappointed big time.

He hardly put a foot wrong defensively against Atletico.

It's just his passing that has been troubling lately.
Of course not  They didn't mean to attack and yet he managed to fuck up as many times as he could, without any pressure! that's what makes it even worse. He looked like a kid handling the ball, not a professional.

And did you really erase last season from your memory? Remember Real Madrid? Galatasaray?

His defensive abilities are still great, but he's become too comfortable playing LCB in a back 3, passing it around under absolutely no pressure for at least 30 Serie A games per season

So when he is actually in a pit of pressure with the ball his crap technique is exposed.

Which happens A LOT in Europe. So you're basically saying the same thing i am, he's not good enough for top Football against top teams.

I understand we have to take it a step at a time but it's high time we start thinking about improving our defence. As it stands we have nothing but unreliable defenders, all of them minus Barzagli.

If we changed our tactics to not play poverty tiki taka around the back 3, and hopefully play a back 2 then this problem will be much less significant

As for unreliable defenders, get used to it.

Pretty much all the top teams have an unreliable, mistake prone CB in their starting XIs. You juve have to defend as a team. Unless we throw PSG money about there's no way in hell we get a near perfect pairing of CBs.

If we could actually attack with directness and intent against top teams, we'd be worrying less about absolutely needing a clean sheet in order to get a result. Our defence is fine on the whole, improving our defence or our CMs at this point would cost a lot and give us a little.

Sure, all teams have their Bonucci's but we can't have nothing but that for defenders. You make a good point that the more we keep the ball on the other half the less mistake prone we might be back there, in fact it's a logical affirmation.

But again, even if i agreed we have a decent defence on the whole it's the individual mistakes that hurts us the most. Those fuck ups simply can't happen at the big stage. It cost us a lot before and it will cost us even more if we can't get them defenders focused and sharper.

We need one top defender in our line, agreed.

But our team as a whole would be better off improving other areas, as the way our whole team work off the ball and defend is exceptional for the most part.

Of all teams in Europe, I would not trade our back 4 for those of any other team. If chiellini isnt a top defender by your standards, who is?
