I'm sure we'll all agree that Capello did a good job tonight and praise him for playing with 3 strikers, but IMO it was another detail that won us the match: The fact that he dared, for the first time this season, to play with just one defensive midfielder, something I've been wanting to see for a long time. If this game has convinced Capello that we can play with just one defensive midfielder without suffering in defence too much, it leaves a lot of interesting options for the future, for example playing two real wingers with a real playmaker, Nedved on the left and Oli on the right, and Camo behind the strikers for example, and it would give us much more versitality in attack and help us create more and bring some flair and creativity to the match. We would be a bit weaker defensivly, but IMO we could make up for it by holding the ball longer and making our opponents defend.

    Capello: Juve earned it
    Wednesday 9 March, 2005
Fabio Capello maintains Juve fully deserved to knock Real Madrid out of the Champions’ League after 210 minutes of tense football.

“It is a deserved result and we played well against an opponent that had a real desire to get a victory here,” noted the Juventus boss after their 2-1 aggregate win.

“We also created plenty of chances, but unfortunately weren’t able to make more of them. Real’s only real opportunities were that Ronaldo upright and Roberto Carlos free kick.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mauro Camoranesi and Marcelo Zalayeta were wasteful in front of goal, but substitute David Trezeguet scored the crucial strike that took this tie to extra time.

“Trezeguet still isn’t 100 per cent fit and we agreed to put him in later because he is more effective when the tempo begins to drop,” revealed Capello.

The tactician made a surprise choice when he replaced captain Alessandro Del Piero with Trezeguet after just 55 minutes of play.

“Zalayeta works harder and is a more valuable asset in the air. Del Piero did his job, just as everyone else did, as this was a game where everyone had to come together for the result.”

There are now no Spanish representatives in the quarter-finals, while Juventus and Milan could be joined by Inter when they play their second leg tie against Porto next week.

“Over the two legs I definitely think we deserved to qualify. Real play well in the middle of the park, but I’d say we were clearly the better side,” concluded Capello.

Gianluca Pessotto stepped into the full-back role so that Gianluca Zambrotta could fill in for the injured Pavel Nedved.

“The team performance was at a great level and it’s one of those nights that make football worth playing,” said the defender. “We were aware of the difficulties, but Juventus have proved they want to go all the way in this competition.”

Pessotto revealed that Capello had predicted the tie would go to extra time and his tactical plans were based on that theory.

“The Coach said that we should attack, but not leave space at the back, as this was going to be a long game and the breakthrough could come at any moment. Real still created a few chances, but I’d say Juve were a step above tonight.”

“Our patience was the key, as we didn’t get nervous as the clock kept on ticking and maintained our concentration until we reaped what we sowed. We knew conceding a goal would mean going out, so the whole team performance was magnificent.”

    So true.

Capello was spot on tonight. Our defense looked solid even though we had three players up top and only one holding midfielder. This is how we should play football.

    Bravo Capello :star:

I doubt it. This was an emergency situation that made Cap play just Emerson. I don't think he will keep doing it.

If trezeguet didn't score ,I would bash Capello like everyone in this forum for taking alex out, because trezeguet wasn't ready.things went gone :thumb:
Capello has the balls to play with trident against a team like real madrid, I was saying that we should play defensivly and with counter atacks i don't know if it would work, but this one worked,it was very risky as I expected that we can't score 3 goals against real, one goal would screw our night, but thanks to this defenitly greatest defense of world we survived.Imo we should continue to play this way, And I agree with you Zlatan,it is better and more beautifull to play with one defensive player.

yap...that one defensive midfield tactic definately not good for 90 minutes.... the opponent just need to suck in the early preassure and they will create openings.... but we know it can be depandable on emergency cases...

why?...even though all the 3 strikers created chance , all of them were blunt in front of goal.. it was clear as air we needed trezeguet at that moment... my early prediction was for Capelo to sub Zlatan for all the incompatancy in front of goal, but thank god he suprised me and sub Del Piero..as all 3 of them who stays later contribute to the scorline.....

I agree with Martin, that it was because of the situation that Cap decided to go with only Emerson because Tachi wasn't fit enough, and Cap doesnt seem to trust Appiah anymore as he usually losses his balance and the oppenent start a counter attack.

Apart from that, I think Cap was spot on with everything that went on througout the match. (i was calling for Zala's head before he scored to be substituted with Olivera:D, which evenually happened).

Camoranesi is playing brilliant football, his ball control and technique seems to be perfect. Imo, if he continuos like this untill the end of the season, he should be nominated for Fifa player of the year award. Now i know this sounds like an exaggeration after the Madrid win, but you got to admit that he's been somewhat special this season.

I would be very pissed if he took zalayeta out, he was doing great job.as for trezeguet,I mean the guy is not fit, he came in 60th?or 70th? minute I don't remember.I never expecting him to score in that short of time, but he did it.

Camoranesi, defenitly a Key player along with Nedved.these 2 are irreplaceable.
a lot of people bash him,but I love him most for running the whole match, for his fighting spirit.he sometimes does stupid things, stupid shots or passes, but on the other hand he makes the team move

Next year Capello will go with 3-4-3, after some serious thinking I'm sure of it. After all, it's he's favourite tactic, and it seems that he's trying to capture players suitable for this formation.

For this year I agree with aressandro10, don't even think that he'll use this kind of formation when Nedved is fit, he's Italian after all.... ;)

So true. Imagine this in the near future:

    --Zlatan-Trezeguet-Zalayeta
    --Nedved-Emerson-Camoranesi
    Zambrotta-Canna-Thuram-Zebina
    ------------Buffon

    Im happy he included Zalayeta.

One thing that Im truly happy about tonight is how we didnt 100% defend after we're leading by a goal - we always see that from Capello, but today we attacked until the end and mantained our focus (something that we lacked from december to february). And it paid off.

Congrats to the coach, players, and unsung heroes who contributed to the performance.

ps - Is Jens Bangsbo still with us? Doesnt seem so, has he left us? And I'm always curious about the guy whos always beside Capello (he was with Juve even before Cap), the one with black hair. :D

Deffence wins us the match today, it is not easy to play 120 min with a treident against the likes of Zizo, Raul, Figo, Fat @ss, Owen... witouth conceding one goal at least...
Canna and Thuram r the best deffensive patrnership in the worl at the moment even better than Maldini Netsa...

UEFA states that teams from the same country will not play togather at this stage , so we will not play milan or inter , maybe on the semi finals:D
