Moggi to face Calciopoli trial

The Calciopoli police investigation continues with news that Luciano Moggi will go to trial along with Claudio Lotito, the Della Valle brothers and several referees.

The sporting justice system went through its process in the summer of 2006, which saw Fiorentina, Milan, Lazio and Reggina docked points and Juventus demoted to Serie B.

The legal investigation is taking considerably longer and only this evening was it confirmed who would be facing trial starting January 20, 2009.

Disgraced former Juventus director general Moggi is the main figure in the investigation into alleged manipulation of referees in order to favour specific teams.

The charges are sporting fraud and being part of a criminal organisation.

Others named by Judge Eduardo De Gregorio include Fiorentina patrons Andrea and Diego Della Valle, Lazio President Lotito, Reggina chief Pasquale Foti and former Milan director Leandro Meani.

Referees Paolo Bergamo, Paolo Bertini, Antonio Dattilo, Massimo De Santis, Marco Gabriele, Pierluigi Pairetto, Salvatore Racalbuto and Pasquale Rodomonti are also included.

Another group faces reduced charges simply of sporting fraud and will go through a much shorter trial on October 27.

They are ex-Juventus general manager Antonio Giraudo, referees Tullio Lanese, Stefano Cassarà, Duccio Baglioni, Domenico Messina, Gianluca Rocchi, Paolo Dondarini, Alessandro Griselli, Giuseppe Foschetti, Marco Gabriele and Tiziano Pieri.

However, the Judge ruled that former Federation President Franco Carraro and ex-FIGC secretary Francesco Ghirelli will not stand trial, as they were found innocent.

The full list of those who will be involved in the trial from January on charges of sporting fraud and belonging to a criminal organisation:

Marcello Ambrosino, Paolo Bergamo, Paolo Bertini, Enrico Ceniccola, Antonio Dattilo, Massimo De Santis, Andrea Della Valle, Diego Della Valle, Mariano Fabiani, Maria Grazia Fazi, Pasquale Foti, Marco Gabriele, Silvio Gemignani, Claudio Lotito, Gennaro Mazzei, Innocenzo Mazzini, Leonardo Meani, Sandro Mencucci, Luciano Moggi, Pierluigi Pairetto, Claudio Puglisi, Salvatore Racalbuto, Pasquale Rodomonti, Ignazio Scardina, Stefano Titomanlio.
