Yeah, a lot of stuff from the book they couldn't put in a movie obviously. But a lot of it seemed filled up with parts thats were overdone or unecessary. The way he describes in depth his and others' apparel was important for understanding the character and the materialism the book is about, but you get the point quickly and it could have been done a little less. What was really unnecessary was the whole chapters dedicated to describing Whitney Houston's, Huey Lewis' and Genesis' music. In the movie, all that stuff was condensed and not tedious.

Noticed that the 4 year old Preacher thread blew up today... I didn't really spend much time there, but I figured that I would recommend a couple of books.
"The Varieties of Scientific Experience: A Personal View of the Search for God" and "The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark"
Whatever side of the religious argument one is on, these books (especially "The Varieties...") just offer more 'grist for the mill, as it were.
Both are by Carl Sagan, who, in my opinion, is one of the most intelligent, insightful, positive and articulate men that have ever walked this earth. Bit of a personal hero of mine - also check out Cosmos, if you haven't seen it; dated, but still good.

Books I've read recently:
1. (graphic novel) Maus by Art Spiegler. I think this is a must read for anyone really. It was simple, and tells things the way it is, it seems like Art (and I think he said something along similar lines) just wanted to tell his father's story with the holocaust and how things were/are to better understand his father. That's it.
2. Breath by Tim Winton. I think the writing here is spectacular, very captivating. The end feels rushed, but worth it.
3. Room by Emma Donoghue - 'twas a nice perspective, creative in that sense, inspired by Natasha Kampusch's story I assume.
4. One Day by David Nicholls - my first ever romantic novel, it was funny... and then 70-80% into the book it went downhill.
Book I'm currently reading:
David Millar's autobiography, "The fall and rise of david millar: Racing through the dark". VERY easy to read, just tells you straight up what it's like in the cycling world.

Just finished the Bourne trilogy. These have virtually nothing to do with the movies, aside from some shared character names, and the general idea of a guy missing his memory.
Identity and Supremacy both great, while Ultimatum was less so.
Also recently read Paul Auster's New York trilogy. Fucking abysmal. Easily the most tedious reading I've done since uni.
