    I'm enjoying Orwell's Homage to Catalonia - his non-fiction is consistently better than the fiction he's famous for.

    life and fate, by Vasily Grossman.
    One of the great 20th century Russian novels, barely known in the west though. Written in the 60s, all known manuscripts were confiscated and destroyed, and only in the 80s was a smuggled edition published in the west
