What we should have done is paid €5m for Jorge Martinez despite him easily being worth over €10m at the time, just in case he flopped hard. Catania should have done the right thing and considered this possibility.
Retrospective quantifying of transfers at the initial point is bollocks. If you were always against those moves then fair enough, but I'd say that is unlikely in most cases.

The transfer of Jorge Martinez obviously sucked for a multitude of reasons, but he did come off a very good 09/10 season with Catania, and was one of the better left-sided midfielders in the league at the time. Everything that could go wrong went wrong once he signed with us though.
