What about "monkey". If you say monkey to a black man, everyone will say it's racist. If you say monkey to a white man and that man sues you, he'll be laughed at. While it's the same bloody thing. I always thought that discrimination was about creating unjustified differences ;).
The monkey thing doesn't even make sense. How is a black man more of a monkey than a white man?

Depends on the motive. People who've heard slurs on tv and just start using them without thinking about it I wouldn't call racist. That is to say the impact of their statements amounts to racism, but is ultimately not intended to be.
I think any kind of slur which puts people into boxes sets a bad example and causes some kind of intolerance/discrimination, so in that perspective racial slur is no different from calling someone a fatass imo.

But with racial slur, one could question, if you're calling a black guy a monkey for example, whether you're implicitely stating/assuming that all blacks are inferior.

When Vinman called Seven a stupid waffle eater or whatever, I didn't feel offended as a Belgian because to me it's obvious Vinman only said that to insult Seven.

Agreed, this is silly. Calling a black guy a monkey obviously has racial connotations.
Considering that even in Europe people of color have been looked down as inferior to whites. Add in the coming from Africa thing and the logical insult is to call blacks monkeys.

Yeah, that's what I'm asking. Because when you insult someone, you usually point out some kind of weakness/inferiority. So with racial slur, are you pointing out an inferiority or a weakness? Do you consider blacks to be inferior or do you consider being black a weakness because in a lot of circumstances blacks are/have been treated inferiorly? Or maybe you're just using it because you know it gets to them?

Generally, you want to make that person feel inferior. I personally, don't feel that way toward people, but a lot of folks do. A true racist actually believes that black people, jews, arabs, whatever are inferior to him. Sometimes people use racist remarks to just hurt someone, but don't necessarily believe the rhetoric behind those insults. We call them dicks and sometimes they get lumped into the same category as true racists. To answer your questions, it's a bit of everything.

Yeah, and it's obvious that Van Damme is just a dick, not a racist. And I think Oguchi knows that too. But of course, any kind of discriminating slur is wrong.

it was funny, when i was in new york i was told my cousin who lives there, african-american? you don't just call black people black?
to be honest mate i think most sensible black americans realize the idiocy of bringing their forefathers heritage into their own identity. i mean most black americans will never have been to africa and probably never will and in a country full of immigrants grandchildren where do we stop?
african american, latin american, italian american, english american, dutch american.......... why do the blacks have to differentiate? there are thousands of americans with scottish heritage but probably couldn't tell a bag-pipe from a sporran and they don't feel the need to go about proclaiming themself mac-american

That doesn't make sense at all. Calling a black man a monkey obviously has racial connotations. It's like me calling you a "Sand Nigger", i'm sure that wouldn't offend you at all. It would however offend me.

Actually if you believed in evolution*, does it really make a difference, black or white? ;)

    * I realize that the above mentioned comment could cause this to turn into another religion vs science debate. I stress that that was not my intention at all :p
