He had less then stellar luck with the timing of his club choices, but still defenitely amongst the top few best defenders in his generation. Would only take injury free Nesta and a total rock in Thuram over him. With Stam being similar level in club but without the NT pedigree.

Jorginho is 30, and only last 2 years you would say people took note of him as an stand out player. Otherwise allways seen as upper mid level rotational player.


You don't realize what a huge name Cannavaro was in his day. He was a dominant force with Parma as a youngster, and marquee world class name since then. And his world cup performance was as iconic as it get leadership wise. To the point some legit compare him to the best defender of that generation in Nesta. funny how the collective memory of football fans work. there's some common knowledge like beckenbauer is an all time great, but ask twitter who's the best between van dijk and nesta, and you'll get over 80% of votes for the dutch who had one, maybe two standout years throughout his career. it is what it is.

Consistency is a major thing for a defender, 05/06 Canna for sure was among the best defenders I've seen, but I wouldnt call 02-04 Inters Cannavaro or post 2006 Cannavaro (still only 33 at the time) better than Puyol or Campbell. I remember thinking in Cannas 2nd stint that Chiellini-Legrottaglie in 08/09 looked better than Chiellini-Cannavaro in 09/10.

All I'm saying for me Cannavaro isnt some mythical legendary beast that deserves to be held on a pedestal like Nedved, del Piero, Buffon or Chiellini. A very good player, but nothing else.

Jorginho was only spectacular for like six months. Chelsea fans wanted him benched while under Lampard.

Cannavaro was obviously better than Campbell. Not sure about Puyol though, he was holding up the Barca defense basically by himself for a long-time.

The World Cup is the main reason cannavaro won balon d’or. He had a beastly year even with the club but overall, there were better defenders.

I’d say chiellini is better but even if he wasn’t, his time with Juve has been more impressive than cannavaro’s time at juve

Cannavaro was literally unplayable when in form. Those two years with us and the WC2006 was GOAT defending IMO.

He’s definitely overrated. He had two great seasons, but over his entire career, he’s nothing special.

Cannavaro was great for a while, people say he was bas at inter but he was there for only 2 years between his fantastic Parma and Juve days. And his peak was scary good. Jorginho had a very good year, others had better but he is among the front runners because he was part of 2 european champions in the same year. Hes not on of the marquee midfielders of this generation. Hes not even the best mid for his club or country

Yeah he did but I'm sure if you asked him he'd tell you Cannavaro was another level. And not just because he is modest. Chiellini has had considerably more longevity at the elite level, however.

Chiellini is a considerably less gifted player who has squeezed every last ounce out of his talent and married it with an unnerving mentality to have a fantastic career. And as I said, his longevity is greater. Plus captaining his team to the Euros at 37 forever cements his legend.

I'm quite divided regarding Van Dijk.

At one hand I think he's a great defender and it's a fact he's been instrumental to Liverpool and their succes in recent years. Without him they wouldn't have won the titles they did, after they signed him their defense suddenly became way more stable. He seemed to be the missing piece for them and he's a leader at their back.

But on the other hand I think some are taking it too far when they're labelling him as one of the GOAT defenders, he's not. He's a very good and solid defender, but he has only been at the top level for 3 years or so.

He still needs to perform like this for some 4-5 years more to be considered one of the best of all time imo.

Cannavaro was one of the select few defender superstars (and almost from the very start of his career), others being R.Carlos, Maldini, Nesta and more recently Ramos.
