He was AWFUL last night, that goes without saying. Thats without even considering the awful conditions put to him, but on individual level he was bad, no arguments.
But no, for the type of player he is, there is not many who have the obbsessive drive to tackle and hound back for possession. The of player I mean is creative playmakers AM/CM types who usually are too soft to who have this terrier like attitude he has. Personality thing I guess (and his hot temperament is defenitely a negative for him), but also defenitely something he worked on in PSG, he is extremelly committed to pressuring and getting back possession (in team unit, midfield trio or team pressurring, not left out to sea with dead old legs DDR vs 6 masterful central mifielders...).
Yeah he isnt someone that stands on his own in this fasion or even suitful for pivot, but as all around CM playmaker he defenitely defends more and better then most in his role. Atleast in this aggressive style (and there is a chance he might feel the need to commit even more in this way due to not playing with Matuidi anymore, dumbasses playing Pastore in that role now too). You wont be finding Modric, Pjanic, Kroos, Isco, Özil, Iniesta, Silva etc be able to do this to Messi (yeah its a clip, but its from a single game, and highlights his defensive game clearly):
Its part of his reportoire and defenitely one that you cant deny.
And no its good look for him, but its not a coincidence Verratti looks like he is complete world class player routinely for PSG, where he mastered his niche, while he is yet to have 2 good games in a row for Italy. Besides the constant injuries in national team duty, its also defenitely he is simply still finding his way and role (he is not really the kind of character that likes being the star of the team), trying to function in a way thats not allways suited to him, both him and Insigne defenitely need to be utilized better since they should be the difference makers.
