Italy will objectively see it as a failure, because the goal is always at least semi final or winning the entire thing, but obviously the overwhelming feeling is that they did very well.

Also, they were desperately unlucky with how the schedule turned out. In normal circumstances they'd have gotten the easy route, because they did great in winning their group.

that's an insanely unbalanced draw. just like the cl this year: real had to overcome wolfsburg and city, while atleti had bayern and barcelona en route to the final. france, germany, italy and probably spain would have an easy way to the final if any of those were drawn against england, wales, belgium and portugal.

part of it was "big" teams underperforming, part was 3rd placed teams progressing. the tournament as a whole isnt as strong as some of the previous ones so you got a lot of "weak" teams in the knock outs. with some big teams being crap, you got most of them on one side of the draw. Italy and Spain should have been playing a semifinal instead of Portugal and Wales now, if Italy didnt shoot itself in the foot and Spain didnt underperform

Hmm.. A shootout can be a bit of a lottery, but in the end the players do have a chance to score. Pelle, Zaza and Darmian all crumbled under the pressure. That's a weakness. Neuer made a great save on Bonucci's second penalty (which was very predictable tbh), so that's a strength of Germany. A bit of luck is involved, but it is part of the game.

this one had Wales and Iceland, and maybe Poland could be considered a surpirse too. apart from them, N. Ireland, Ireland, Hungary also made it out of the group. Germany, France and (based on performances in the group stage) Croatia were the only stand out teams. Spain came with a new team, Portugal and England are crap, a lot of teams that shouldnt even be here, so this tournament wasnt really that strong

The problem is that it was an inflated tournament. N. Ireland, Ireland and Portugal should never have made it out of the group, because they finished third. If you finish third in a four team group, you should be out. Imo it completely messed up the schedule.

24 teams was an utter failure. too bad they cant go back to 16 now but will probably increase it to 32 in the future

i wasnt talking about you, sorry if i made it sound like that, but when i was saying this a lot of people here told me that it was stupid to complain about a win and that Italy shouldnt make these calculations but go for the win in every game. that win backfired now, they could have been playing a semifinal vs Portugal now with great chances to reach the final, too bad.

they obviously played a great game vs Germany, Conte set the team up very well made them play great and they were equal to the Germans (apart from subs, but we talked about this already 2 days ago), but when looking at the tournament in general, i cant see how anyone would be satisfied with a QF exit

You have a point. Logically, the only thing that should count as luck is a referee mistake.
Everything else is technically up to skill. No luck involved.

It doesn't, but teams should still set goals. The fact Italy consistently set the final as a goal is the very reason they make it from time to time. They played well and were unlucky, but Barzagli is right: no one will remember in 4 years time. If you're Italian, you remember victories. Same goes for the French or the Germans.
