Ventura: 'Italy need training time'
By Football Italia staff

Giampiero Ventura admits “this Italy side is obviously not good enough for the World Cup, but we’re working towards it. We need more time in training.”

The Azzurri earned a 1-0 victory away to Albania on Monday night, ensuring they are top seeds in the October 17 draw for the World Cup play-offs.

“In the 1-1 draw with Macedonia, we fell apart with a second half of very little intensity, whereas we showed good mental intensity in Albania and were in control of the game,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

The Nazionale only dropped points in their group against Spain – including a 3-0 defeat in Madrid – and that home stalemate with Macedonia last week.

“We had been steadily growing until the match with Spain, which pushed us to take 10 steps back. Some thought that we were stronger than Spain, which is absolutely not true, so the journey hit the buffers for a little while.

“Tonight, I think we got back on track. This is the first real step back towards the progress we had interrupted.”

Ventura again defended his 4-2-4 system, which is not used anywhere in Serie A, and warned the role of a CT is very difficult.

“There used to be blocks of players from one club, even nine from the same team, but here we have one or two per club. These are sides with completely different tactical systems and approaches, so we need to find common ground.

“It’s not about working on the mentality of the players. What we need is to work in training on the field, but every time I call players up, I get at most three to four hours with them to do that.

“This Italy side is obviously not good enough for the World Cup right now, but we’re working towards it.”

Antonio Conte had similar complaints at the lack of time he got with players ahead of Euro 2016.

I guarantee everyone on that team has played in some type of 4-3-3 before. Insigne is their best attacker (player?) and is best suited for a 4-3-3. Any of the STs are fine in a 4-3-3. I guarantee every single CM has played in a 3 man midfield before.

How are you finding common ground by playing Insigne as a wide midfielder? That is the definition of uncommon ground.

He has no idea, he speaks about all these wingers Bla bla bla but he is playing Italy's best player (currently) out of position. I'm talking about Insigne.
He is playing two midfielders that can't sustain that many attackers

I was smug to everybody during 2006 WC and I've been paying the price for 12 years now. This shittyness and embarrasment every 2 years can barely be endured. I should have just supported juventus + my national team like everybody else instead of that collective of useless faggots. But hey the Squadra was almost full Juve back then so it felt like supporting Juve

players that need to be on this team that are ignored, Jorginho, probably our best post Pirlo creator from that position. Balotelli, hate all you want, he's made some huge goals for the Azzurri and is better than Immobile by a long shot. Berardi, wth happened to this guy? Chiesa, young up and coming player needs to be out there over some of the choices being made and Florenzi, is he hurt?
Say what you want about Ciro Immobile, but the guy perform when it comes for italy.

Balotelli may come useful, but with Belotti, and Immobile up front, Italy hardly need someone like Balotelli. Probably good, with a huge probable of make another ruckus.
They could always take Zaza, he's on form rightnow.
Jorginho, Chiesa, Zaza, and Ventura decide to call up the likes of Eder and Inglese :sergio:

Greece would be the best draw, the others all have the kind of strong mental and physical game which has caused problems for far more talented Italy teams in the past.
Italy certainly won’t face With the teams crotia,Portugal and Switzerland(Portugal/Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, Denmark
Unseeded: Sweden (TBC), N Ireland, Rep Ireland, Greece/Bosnia)Hope we get eithe ireland or grecee.

neither of those teams should cause any problems for Italy, I've no doubt they'll qualify. I wouldn't write off Ventura just yet, Conte's Italy really came together only in EURO2016 as is the case for most NT's going through generational/coaching changes

The 2006 team was full of players I liked. Back then I sort of thought I was an Italy fan, now I realise I probably just really liked the players. Because I don't see the current players through the same lens, I don't really care how well or how poorly they do tbh.
