Report: Byron Moreno arrested
Tuesday 21 September, 2010
Former referee Byron Moreno, who caused controversy in Italy’s 2002 World Cup elimination, has reportedly been arrested for smuggling heroin.
The ex-official was stopped at JFK airport in New York, according to DEA sources who spoke to the Ecuadorian media.

It is reported he had at least 6kg of heroin stashed in his underwear as he went through customs.

Moreno became notorious when he officiated Italy’s second round exit to hosts South Korea in the 2002 World Cup.

He rejected several penalty appeals, disallowed at least one goal for incorrect offside calls and sent off Francesco Totti.

Italy lost 2-1 in extra time to a header from Ahn Jung Hwan.

Moreno was later suspended for 20 matches and investigated by FIFA after the game between Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito and Barcelona Sporting Club of Guayaquil went on for 13 minutes of injury time.

He had only signalled six, but Liga de Quito were trailing 3-2 and ended up winning at the 101st minute.

Moreno was also accused of falsifying his report to hide the number of minutes actually played.

At the time of this match, he was running as a candidate for election on the Quito city council.

He eventually retired in 2003 and is now working as a commentator in Ecuador.

...and now he can add drug smuggler to his resume as well.

Laughable that some people defended him vs Italy. Next to calciogate, the biggest footballing sham of my lifetime .

It's possible, but there's no proof. And it doesn't automatically make every failure of the Azzurri in the last decade excusable on grounds that every other ref was also corrupted.

Bit of a leap there Martin :D

What FIFA do like to do is put weak minded officials, usually from relatively obscure footballing countries, into important matches. It randomizes the result this way. I also think the notion that because a big team has missed chances they deserve to be handicapped by the official is ludicrous.

It's an ancient argument we've had lots of times. But you know, boredom..

The back story is that in those days Italy fans used to blame everything on the referee always, for why Italy continued to fail in the big tournaments. Drove me crazy. Remember Sweden - Denmark 2-2? That was "obviously" fixed too, just like all the others. With some people there's no trying to reason.

Umm, what are you talking about?

I said South Korea - Italy was fixed, not the entirety of Italy's footballing history lol.

But the Italian "haters" will always quickly resort to that argument.

Why would you even say this? Its completely unnecessary, he clearly was only talking about one game...

Moreno stuffing a few kilograms of heroin up his arse has nothing to do with 2002. Sure it damages his credibility, but that doesn't mean everything he ever did was dishonest.
