just a heads up for used-car buyers - Japanese cars are generally much more reliable than the rest, while German ones aren't exactly known for their reliability, especially for 5+ year old cars :p. Of course, it's very important how the previous owner treated the car but, all things equal, I'd go Japanese any time.

Something to keep in mind too as maintenance/repair of German cars is generally more expensive and they are likely to require that a lot more frequently than a Japanese car.

Korean is the new Japanese, much cheaper parts too.

Kia and Hyundai both have taken their customer services to a whole new level too, even German brands aren't on that level now.

I have a 2001 Hyundai and repairs have been very minimal for all the shit I've taken it through. Really tough car. Drives and handles like shit though, so you gotta keep that in mind. Not really fresh looking either, but I make do :D

For anyone who cares, I'm still in the hunt for a car. I'm town between a VW Golf and a BMW 316i. I've driven both at this stage and there are strong arguments for both autos. I'm goin on a little road trip down south tomorrow to look at 3-4 cars, listed below, so hopefully I'll find a winner.

The sensible side of me says I should buy one of these:
http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3431519 1.4ltr

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3403116 1.4ltr (flashy wheels :D)

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3424936 1.9ltr (diesel)

But there's a big part of me that doesn't want to think about extra costs involved in running a larger car, that really want's this one:

between those above, I'd suggest the BMW - VW is notoriously unreliable and would think maintenance wouldn't be that much cheaper than that for the BMW. Also, these cars have pretty high mileage and the rule of thumb for such cars is get the one with the biggest engine as it would be the one least affected (proper maintenance assumed, of course). And of course the BMW is the better quality car of the bunch, considering they are the same age.
BMW has pretty fuel-efficient engines, so the diff in mileage/litter shouldn't be much of a deal-breaker. The added jump in overall safety of the BMW shouldn't be overlooked either.

I would still urge you to consider a Jappy, though ;)

Honestly, a car I would be perfectly content and satisfied with would be the 335i. That thing's a monster! The 335d is nice too (425 lb/ft torque)!

The M3 would be the ultimate one. Love the 335i though.

Even the 330is are amazing. I'm definitely going to get one of them one day :D E46 ftw

Great advice AC thanks, think you may have swayed me towards the beemer again  drove one the other day and just loved the drive. So smooth on the road and the cabin is a really pleasant place to be.

Have yet to find a jappy car that I like, that's within my price range?

good choices gents, only thing with bmw is you gotta get the sports and premium packages, but their amazing warranty kinda makes up for it. Once warranty is out prepare to constantly pay for maintenance.

For used cars tha Japanese are the only way, some Germany firmes also are reliable and some certain American models.
If you live in a big city and want a small Golf like car, pick smth from Japan, in some countries second hand VW are very very overpriced, because they carry a German reiability myth that isnth there.
If you have the space for a bigger car, go for the BMW
