A-TEAM BEAT OLYMPIC YOUNGSTERS: 2-0

The national side today finished their Dutch training sessions by beating the Olympic Team in the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium. In form Roy Makaay scored and Frank de Boer added another. The youngsters initially challenged their older counterparts but couldn’t keep up the good work in the end: 2-0.

Holland’s up and coming starts faced the Dutch in a similar formation in which the Austrians will play the Dutch next week. “If Austria plays in a defensive frame of mind, we will attack, and put pressure on their defenders,” spoke Advocaat.

With Phillip Cocu playing in a more offensive role, Holland created chances but failed to score in the first half. Patrick Kluivert, who was replaced at half time by Hasselbaink, was closest. His lob went just wide.

After a short break Holland looked more dangerous with Ronald de Boer coming into the game and playing just behind Hasselbaink up front. It made a significant difference. Holland outplayed the youth set up and should maybe have netted a few more.

With Andy van der Meyde not available, Advocaat will have to address the traditional problems in right-midfield. Glasgow Rangers player Fernando Ricksen tried the position in the first half, but obviously possesses more defensive qualities. Seedorf and De Boer are the options he has for the right flank.

Up front Advocaat really has a major doubt with United’s Van the Man. Only if he is a hundred percent, will he travel to Vienna. Today – for the second time – he didn’t train with the group. He spent a short time kicking the ball around with fysio Ouderland and colleague Van Hooijdonk. Even though he didn’t want to elaborate too much on Wdnesday’s starting line up, Advocaat has good replacements with Hasselbaink or Makaay.

Holland will want three points from next week’s game, as Advocaat considers another opponent in the group to be more of a threat. “The Czech game is going to be the decider,” he said. An Austrian reporter popped a question at Advocaat, asking him if there was any danger of underestimating the Austrians. “We didn’t feature during the summer so we’re not in the position to take anything for granted,” said the Dutch manager.

    COLLINA TO LEAD AUSTRIA-NETHERLANDS

Holland’s upcoming qualifier against Austria is in good hands. Top Italian referee Pierluigi Collina will be in charge in Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium.

The Italian also refereed Holland versus the Czech Republic during EURO 2000. On that day Holland won 1-0. The Dutch kick off at 20.30 (CET) on the 16th of October and want to follow up on their recent triumph over Belarus in Eindhoven.

Collina was also in the middle during the last World Cup final during his second appearance in the World Cup finals. The bald headed Dracula look-alike Italian also featured in the 1999 Champions League final. He saw Manchester United dramatically leave Bayern München empty handed in the final minutes thanks to a Solskjaer strike.

    MAKAAY TO START
    Monday 14 October 2002 16:45 hrs

Roy Makaay will start during Wednesday’s clash in Vienna against Austria. Ruud van Nistelrooij has been ruled out injured. Makaay sat in the stands last time around, but his brilliant form for Deportivo has left Advocaat no choice. He’ll partner Kluivert up front. Other names for the first eleven weren’t mentioned today in Noordwijk.

The United star isn’t the only player that’s coping with physical difficulty. Both Davids and Van Hooijdonk will not join training today, but look okay for the game in Vienna. Advocaat revealed there was no stand by list. “Even seventeen is enough,” he confidently stated.

The coach wasn’t fooled by coach Hans Krankl’s recent underdog act. The Austrians beat Belarus in Minsk over the weekend and head the group with maximum points from two games. “We’ve been warned. Belarus is a tough opponent, but Austria showed great organisation and out-countered them. Our defence will have to be solid on Wednesday.”

Other than Roy Makaay, Advocaat mentioned no other names. Kluivert will partner the Deportivo man up front. Ranger Ronald de Boer might find himself back in the line-up in right midfield in a 4-4-2. That’s if Austria only play the one striker. If they play two, Holland will have three defenders, five in the middle of the park with most probably Zenden on the right and reborn AC Milan all rounder Clarence Seedorf on the left.

Advocaat: “Whatever we play, we’ll have to show quality enough to put pressure on the Austrians. We want to go out there and do a good job.”
