Marcelo Zalayeta’s penalty shoot-out miss against Australia cost Uruguay a place in the World Cup Finals today.
The Juventus striker was one of two Uruguayans to have their spot-kicks saved by Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, after the South American outfit had squandered late chances in extra-time to secure their side’s safe passage to Germany next summer.
Dario Rodriguez, who had scored in the first leg win, turned from hero to villain when his penalty was saved in sudden death, but Mark Viduka gave the visitors hope by missing the target from 12 yards.
Zalayeta then stepped up to level the match only to see his shot blocked by Schwarzer, before former Cremonese striker John Aloisi struck the fatal blow in a dramatic finish.
Leading 1-0 from the home leg, the South Americans had started the game well, with Inter’s Alvaro Recoba causing Gus Hiddink’s men all sorts of problems at the back.
However, after Parma midfielder Marco Bresciano (pictured) leveled the tie on aggregate 10 minutes before the break, the Socceroos grew in confidence.
In front of 83,000 impassioned spectators in a packed Telstar Stadium in Sydney, substitute Harry Kewell spurred the home side on and both he and Bresciano missed chances to score.
Zalayeta, though, led an Uruguayan revival in the additional half-hour, and Gustavo Varela, Guillermo Rodriguez and Richard Morales all wasted good chances to put the tie beyond doubt.

Say what you want, Australia beat Uruguay, doesnt matter how, we did. It doesn't mean were are better team coz were not, we played better than them in Uruguay and in Australia, and were in.
This is a massive boost for Soccer in OZ, even if we lose every game in the WC, who cares, its not always about winning, plus who gave Greece a chance in 2004.
