I disagree with that. By selling Zidane we had managed to acquire top players like Thuram, Buffon and Nedved, and these became key players for us, who had more impact than Zidane. Frenchman was unmotivated in the last few years here and often under performed. His foolishness (headbutting) got us eliminated from the CL. The reason for Real's popularity go far beyond Zidane's transfer.

even if the replacing players have more impact it also matters what the departing player has on the other team. Zidane won the CL with Madrid, so we lost. It's comparative in competitive football, it matters what the other teams are doing.
for instance, if in theory 15 is what it takes to win and Juve improves +1 from 10 from a transfer while Madrid improves +1 from 14 then our +1 is a losing share. we are doing catch up, Juve must figure out how to strengthen without strengthening a rival because Juve have to close the gap with the european heavyweights.

Apart from 2001/02 and mind you that Real already had a stellar team, with the likes of Carlos, Figo, Raul, Hierro, they underachieved in Europe for more than a decade. Juve smashed them on every occasion they met, 2002/03, 2004/05, 2008/09 and recorded better results in the CL.
The point being made here is that Zidane's sale helped Juve to build more competitive side, and the real difference in incomes between the two clubs, who were pretty much side by side even after Zidane's departure, started after calciopolli.

Its clear as water that Zidane just doesnt wanted Juve anymore... he had to be sold no matter what.
I dont know if his sale catapulted madrid in what it is now... but for sure the signing of Zidane... the media hype it created around him, and the fact that in the middle of all that hype, he won the CL... cemented their reputation as the "go to" club. That season when they won with Zidane..was simply what settled them into the force they are now. That was magical.
Of course, Calciopoli destroyed us, but madrid always has been ridiculosly famous.
And yeh... if we were given 2 billion dollars for free, we would turn into a force right away too.
