Fabregas makes the 4-5-1 system tick
By Myles Palmer
CESC FABREGAS makes Arsenal's 4-5-1 system effective. His sharp runs linked it all together in Madrid and he did the same last night.
Juventus conceded the first goal to a midfield runner, Micoud, in the previous round, and did the same here as Fabregas scored a classy goal in 40 minutes.
This 2-0 victory is a total vindication of Arsene Wenger's methods and his risky strategy. His young team thrashed the Italian Champions and league leaders.
A glory night for Gooners, a fabulous night for Wenger, and a match where Capello got it completely wrong.
Arsene was bang on before the game when he said, "I think we can give them some problems they don't usually face."
All he has ever said, since 1996, is that he wants his team to improve from game to game. He played 4-5-1 in Madrid on February 2 and won 1-0 and on March 28 he played 4-5-1 against Juventus and won 2-0. In those six weeks we have seen a clear improvement from game to game.
A vibrant team effort, two world class goals, and a clean sheet made this Arsenal's finest performance in the Champions League.
The Professor's redcurrant heroes had more flair, more energy, more sparkle, more determination. The desire that pulsed through the Arsenal team was amazing. They outplayed the Italian champions TOTALLY for the whole game.
They outnumbered them five against two in 60% of the pitch and Lehmann did not have one shot to save to make in 90 minutes
Juventus have an average age of 30.They are the best old team in the Champions League, and they ARE champions, unlike Arsenal, but they never looked like winning at Highbury last night.
Arsene's kids ran the legs off them, as we expected. The visitors were visibly exhausted and demoralized by the end and Camoranesi and Zebina were sent off for two aggravated assaults on sub Robin van Persie and Henry.
Robert Pires had a big game, one of his biggest ever. If Pires plays like this to earn a new contract, give him more one-year contracts.Trezeguet is a plonker and I've always been glad he did not join Arsenal. Capello should have taken him off after half an hour and put on another midfielder, since Arsenal were annihilating Juve in that area.
Their 4-4-2 didn't work and left winger Mutu, like the lazy Trezeguet, never got a kick. Ibrahimovic could not escape from agile Toure or the pacy Eboue.
Incredibly, Capello did not take Mutu off until they were 2-0 down.
Vieira is still a potentially exciting player in a team that does not have an exciting style and does not require him to do the exciting things he did at Arsenal. He didn't make many tackles because he feared the yellow card that he eventually got for a cheap kick on Reyes in 71.
Juventus are the best old team in Italy but the efforts required to stay permanently on top of Serie A for two years have burned them out. And the methods they habitually employ did not translate to this game. The strikers were hopeless and Emerson never crossed the halfway line.
They were dull, rigid and negative, just as they were in that 0-0 against AC Milan a few weeks ago.
Yes, Juventus played a high-tempo game in the first 20 minutes, and tried to attack Flamini, with all their moves going down that flank. But Flamini crashed through tackle after tackle with commendable ferocity and Juventus could not sustain that tempo, as Blackburn or Bolton would have done.
It was an awesome team performance by Arsenal, with Toure, Fabregas, Eboue and Pires outstanding.
This team can dominate a game with sheer running power, as the Petit-Parlour-Overmars team did in 1998.But this team's passing style is more intricate, less dynamic, than eight years ago. They cannot win the ball early in the same way, but they have more variation, more angles.
In a way, Fabregas is the new Bergkamp, although he is smaller, younger and less powerful. I said recently that Cesc is not a natural goalscorer, but that might come. His strike last night looked natural enough. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. He is a strong little lad with great vision. He has dainty feet and chunky thighs and can operate in small spaces and see everything
THE SECOND LEG is next Wednesday, April 5th.
Will Juventus be that bad again? Probably not, but they will be without the suspended Vieira, Zebina and Camoranesi and the injured Del Piero.
Juventus need three goals and that will not happen. Plus, you have to fancy Arsenal to score over there. If beating Real Madrid gives players belief, what does beating Real Madrid and Juventus give them?
SERIE A needs to make a comeback tonight. Could athletic young Lyon beat old AC Milan 2-0?
No, because Kaka and Shevchenko are far superior to Trezeguet and Ibrahimovic. That game could be 3-2 either way. I've been looking forward to it for weeks. Lyon will miss Juninho's class and goal-threat.
Inter are favourites tonight but could be surprised by Villareal. Adriano is off form while Riquelme is hot. With the tiny Sebastian Viera in the Villareal goal, you have to fancy Inter at set-pieces. Recoba is back on form as well.
The Inter players will be surprised that Juventus went down 2-0 at Arsenal. If they win they play Arsenal in the semi.
