Category: Match Reports

A wet night in London was warmed –up by the atmosphere at Highbury, where both sets of fans made their voices heard as Juventus and Arsenal took to the field for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. Despite the importance of the occasion the Juve players did not seem overawed and quickly relaxed into a familiar rhythm, breaking-up the opposition attacks and causing problems with their possession of the ball and slick passing. Both Zebina and Emerson caused problems for the Arsenal backline with a series of tempting crosses, and Ibra went close with a free-kick that was deflected just wide.

However, it was an ex-bianconero that made the difference in the first half. Finding Fabregas in space, Thierry Henry fed the young Spaniard who slotted the ball to the right of Buffon from just inside the area.

After the interval, the bianconeri seemed to add a new determination to their play as they went in search of an equaliser. Within the first five minutes Ibrahimovic had used his power and strength to cause confusion in the Arsenal box but was unable to convert the chances created. Ten minutes later it was the turn of the opposition to attack. Buffon however reacted brilliantly to deny both Henry and Fabregas with a pair of phenomenal saves that employed all the reflexes and intelligence that have made him the best in the world. Indeed, several minutes later he was on hand again, denying both Hleb and Pires in quick succession.

Twenty-five minutes into the second half Fabregas was again involved, providing an incisive pass to Henry from the right-hand side who converted for Arsenal’s second goal. Juventus then pushed forward searching for a goal and went very close when Camoranesi’s chipped shot skimmed the outside of the post.

As the game drew to a close the determination of Camoranesi and Zebina led to both being cautioned for the second time, and as such both were sent off. Despite being two goals down, Juve will still feel that they have a good chance to progress; after all, the second leg is at the Delle Alpi…

Capello's polishing the silver while the Titanic is sinking, that's why. :(

oh man you out of all people, ditka was far worse but we tolerated him. But seriously how was yeasterday Capello's fault? the only dubious Substitution was trez-Zalayeta; but he did ti only coz unlike trez zalayeta supports mid if need be. We played better than them up to the 40th minute. After that we started panicking and arse got more confident.
As for camo, he was battered around all night not getting any calls and as soon as he touched anyone he was called, no excuse for his shameless behavior at the end but those things can frustrate most pros.

How can you say we played better than up till the 40th minute? Up till that moment we didn't have a single shot on goal, while they had at least 5.

We really need players like Oddo,de rosi and not players like Viera and Zebina.I will also say:sell ibrahimovic to madrid at least he is a lot of money worth at the moment. Our game is so predictable, there is no variation.
I dont nead scudeto, champions league is our biggest objective, that`s what all tifozi wants.

We dominated and we were the more fluid side. they actually only had 2 shots on our goal and we completely shut off their offense in those 40 minutes. I thought we were out of it. had we taken that 0-0 to the second half we would have had a different result. The second goal just did it for us.

We did not dominate, both teams were nervous and the goal gave confidence in the Arsenal side, but saying we dominated is just wishful thinking because we gave the ball away more than Haifa Wehbe had eaten cock.

Good challenge here.

But Capello does not have this team prepared to be aggressive and take leads in elimination rounds -- we seem to wait for the game to come to us rather than taking it to the other teams. And I cannot say it's all the players' faults. With the talent we have available, there's no excuse why we should have to struggle as we did against Bremen. There's no excuse why we should appear so flat and ill-prepared against Arsenal.

And as I wrote in another thread:

Watching Capello's subs and tactics in the second half of yesterday's match made me feel like I was watching an 8-year-old at the controls of a runaway bulldozer ... as he was plowing through his mother's flower garden in the back yard and heading with all the heavy machinery to a watery grave at the bottom of the family swimming pool.
"Jane, stop this crazy thing!" The acts of a desperate man. Putting on Chiellini for Mutu was literally the mark of a coach throwing in the towel because nothing was working.

And yes -- Camo and Zebina certainly didn't help our cause by showing their frustrations. But only Capello I can credit with the "22-222-608" record, which is our respective minutes in CL elimination rounds where Juve has held the lead, were at an effective draw, or were behind.

Either you have to believe that we don't have the talent that can go out and soundly defeat Bremen and make an impact against Arsenal -- or you have to wonder if any success we've had in the CL thus far has perhaps occurred not because of but in spite of our coaching and preparation for it.
