We need to move away from 352. While other European clubs adopted 433 or 4231 and have been fairly successful, Italian clubs practically regressed and went 30 years into past. This new trend of 352 for which Juventus are mostly responsible is taking over Serie A. More than 50% of teams are using it. WBs who need to contribute in both phases of the game and regista responsible for dictating tempo are something which will always face insurmountable obstacles in Europe.

WHy ?

Pirlo is the engine of this team, until we decide to sign wingers and AM, we should continue to play with a DLM.
Only creative player? He's our most creative player. We have plenty of creativity though. Tevez, Vucinic, Pogba. How many assists has Vidal made for us since arriving? I really see no issue with playing with a regista. When a team decide to commit a marker to Pirlo, that only opens spaces for Vidal, Pogba or Marchisio. Therein lies the risk associated with marking Pirlo. Does anyone remember when we didn't play with a regista? It was excruciating. A true regista is exactly what we needed. Pogba - Regista - Vidal is a well balanced midfield no doubt. However Pogba in Pirlo's role will be even better, he'll become impossible to mark out of a game.

You're all overreacting to Pirlo's recent form slump.

:disagree:

You are only being creative if you are being flash and fancy.

Altough like you said we have other " creative " players, Pirlo's is the one who can control our tempo, speed up the game if he wants too and slow it down, he's the one who can link the defence with the rest of the players in a wingerless system, watch yesterday game how much we struggled to build our attack from the back, the majority of the time the defence went to our WB ( wich resulted in many miss passes ) to start the attack because Pogba won't present himself to the defenders the way Pirlo does even when he's marked.
Unless we decided to drop the regista system, i can't see how we can cope without Pirlo especially when we are playng against team that will defend with numbers.

I think our problem is that the team is not ready for life without Pirlo yet, more so than we lack creative players. He's a huge figure in our team.

Pogba has succeeded plenty of times in Pirlo's role before. I take yesterdays game as an aberration.
He needs to move more when not in possession. Pirlo is constantly moving around to be able to receive the ball. Pogba is too static and I can't remember more than 2-3 games in which he played as regista. One was vs Chievo last year, Udinese was the other and that's it. Yesterdays of course but he mostly played as b2b mid till now.

Don't know if we should drop this regista based system, but we certainly shouldn't use Pogba there after Pirlo retires. IMO he wouldn't develop to his full potential in that position. The best role for him would be in front of midfield duo, basically what Hamsik does for Napoli. Pogba would become even better player then Hamsik if he was given that role, (considering his abilities, plus the better defensive work).

Pogba will be incredible wherever he plays.

I agree. It was a commebt directed at the future, after Pirlo. A hoalie and an AM are at the top of my wish list.
Or just buy Hernanes.Move Pogba to DM,play Hernanes at CM where he currently plays for Lazio in the 'Xavi Role'.Problem solved.

Pogba

Hernanes-----Vidal

Dont see how this team will struggle without Pirlo.

We dont necessarily need to buy a DLP.Only downside in here would be that Marchisio fanboys would have to see their hero hit the bench more often.

You don't have to play Pogba as we play Pirlo, we just have to keep the midfield ticking over. Let the players rotate between playing more advanced or deeper. Currently Marchisio, Vidal and Pogba can all do that. It will also probably bring Bonucci into the game more as well.

If we're buying an AM, we need to buy wingers too.
Which is what I've been saying for ages to the 4-3-3 crowd who seem to forget that we can only afford top players at cut prices and bosmans. Soon enough some genius will tell you how giovinco, Asamoah, Pepe, Isla and Vucinic can be great wingers and chiellini and ogbonna can be great fullbacks.

The problem with relying on Pirlo is that he can't actually speed up the game. He can control the tempo but only from slow to slower.

He gets run through in Champions League. Teams don't wait for him to control the tempo, they just run at him all game, foul him, take the ball, whatever. It's a different game in CL.

Also, as a sidenote, Torino was man-marking Bonucci and Pogba our sweeper and regista just like Chievo did in the match prior. Teams are trying to force the ball onto our RCB and LCB and it's working decently right now in controlling our offence. Of course, the other team will never get any shots like this but they seem intent to try for 0-0.

Not true, he can increase the pace of the game with one pass only. That's even one of the abilities that make him so special.
