It was only a mattter of time, and I finally did it after a couple of weeks of stock firmware hell.

Rooted my phone (0-click root thanks to Unrevoked) and installed a custom FroYo rom. It's very much a hassle-free process and I feel like a pro after only doing it twice (when my gf saw how much faster/better my phone was she asked me to flash hers too)

Verdict: very nice, I'll never do stock ever again. Everything's a hell of a lot snappier, and app2sd is something that should've been there from the beginning.

Oh, and good timing - I got my package from AndroidStickers in the mail this morning :D

Alright, then I guess you need to start from here: ROOTING.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572

Make sure you get a backup of all contacts and any other data that is not stored on the SD card.

Also install the custom recovery mentioned in the same post. That'll get you prepped up for some custom ROM time!
 Thanks man.

Can I install this Froyo onto my Hero? If so, what functionalities will I have to live without?

That looks like a great ROM. Good to see you take the plunge into rooting and custom roms.
