An extension means he's going to be a definite starter for next season atleast.Seems like we went for the safer option instead of going for a replacement/or changing system which would have been a costly operation.

Not a safe option but a reasonable one. Getting his replacement is not a priority, or at least it should not be. If we're planning to change formation to 4-3-3 then he can again fit in and provide great (possibly even better) matches due to wingers he'd feed with amazing passes. Having said that, it's wingers what we needed and where the money should be invested at this point.

With someone like Pirlo his style of play is such that he shouldn't be restricted by ageing as much as many players. He's a player of technique and tactics, always paces himself well. He's been playing like an 'old' player for years.

It'll probably be the case that he'll need longer to recover over the next couple of years, but he's a guarantee in terms of class, just as Del Piero was.
When the other team is content to play at his pace he is useful of course. When the other team doesn't show him any respect and has ambitions of actually taking the ball and threatening our goal, I'm not sure how useful he is anymore.

Exactly. When Pirlo is marked and pressured he usually misplaces passes and loses possession.

It's surprising he even reached the level he did if that was the case.

Pretty obvious to say that if the opposition plays to a player's weaknesses they will find it more difficult, but we could say the same about many CM playmakers forced to then defend (Xavi included). You have players in a team to do a certain role. Put 3 box-to-box robots in CM and you lose the vision and range of Pirlo, you can't have it all.

Every game Pirlo runs a lot back and forth. You see him right in front of our defense line. And also close to the opponents' box.
If we get a couple of quality speedy wingers I think Pirlo can do more long passes behind defence or if we play more straight-forward plays like wingers dribbling past defenders with fullback support, then maybe pirlo won't have to cover as much ground as our current gamplay demands and still be very effective playing to his strengths.

Pirlo: 'I want Juve extension'

Andrea Pirlo revealed he “wants to stay at Juventus,” will soon secure a
contract extension and is eager to forget the Champions League.

The midfielder’s current deal expires in June, prompting fears he could
leave on a free transfer for Real Madrid, where he’d reunite with Carlo Ancelotti.

“If I chose to leave Milan for Juve it was because I hoped to begin
a winning era in a new club,” he told Radio 105.

“My intentions are clear, as I want to stay at Juventus.
Over the next few days we’ll meet with the club and there is optimism.
“I still want to play. I don’t know when I will retire, but as long as I have
the desire to train and fight, I will certainly continue.

“Antonio Conte is a Coach who gives his players a great deal,
but expects a lot in return. He brought back a winning spirit to Juve
and there is certainly a lot of his doing in our results.

“The turning point of our campaign was definitely the black-out
against Fiorentina. Going from 2-0 down to losing 4-2 made us think about
what we were doing and from then on we won 10 consecutive games.
We realised that winning is not the norm. To win you need desire and sacrifice.

“Unfortunately in the Champions League we got the first two games wrong
and they proved decisive, because they compromised our qualification.
Now we have turned over a new leaf and focused on Serie A. It’s better
not to think about it now.”

I still can't believe we got him.
