i think he hardly find perfect spot for his favorite long pass due to LE highline defense, and instead of giving simple pass to the nearest player he ended draging out some of roma's midfielder to clear the midfield by doing some trick that can release either vidal/marchisio to start the attack. but it didn't turn out so well. i still feel that his movement is very limited because of the roma's high pressure on him.

If they mark him like that, it opens up space. Our CBs came to the half-way line and Chiellini had acres of space... problem is none of them can pass.

Also we don't have a forward or two that like making the runs behind a defense. They like the ball at their feet or are a bit slow like Matri. Would love a Lavezzi and Balotelli up front.

Still though, Pirlo should be told to bulk up... at least he'd hold the ball better under pressure.

This is why Montolivo is needed, whether the majority of the forum want him here or not.

There is simply no one here to act as his understudy that can replace him when he is having a bad match.

I love Pirlo, but if anyone expects to get 36 matches out of him this season, while still maintaing a level of quality similar to what we had seen previously, then they are in for some disappointment.

At Least Montolivo can play the role. Granted, not aas well, but certainly a lot better than anyone else currently on the team.

Its a signing that would make a ton of sense financially as well, seeing as we wouldnt be paying too much for him. Montolivo will never be on Pirlo's level, but the guy is an experienced and pretty decent regista.

If protected properly by Vidal and Marchisio, I think he'd do pretty well for us. He certainy knows how to pass the ball, unlike some of our other players. Just dont play him as a trequartista. Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio, Montolivo, Pazienza, Marrone (and perhaps) Appelt seems pretty damn stacked to me. We need plenty of cover and quality in a 3 man midfield esp when we play in Europe next season.

Too bad many on this forum automatically use the "overated, mediocre Italian" bullshit line whenever discussing these sorts of players.

He also plays the role differently, which can offer some variety..

Both players stay behind the ball, but Pirlo plays more long passes, while Montolivo moves around more while playing lots of shorter passes.

I don't see any reason not to sign Montolivo, if fee and wages are sensible.

he had a bad game because Marchisio and Vidal didn't perform like they usually did with him. specially Marchisio who combined well with him and always helping him in the previous matches... where he was always winning the ball and give it to him right away and always around him when hes surrounded to make simple passes to run away from the pressure. that didn't happen yesterday and he was holding the ball way too long just to find good movement of Marchisio or Vidal but it didn't work.

I don't like this 3-man mid with Pirlo at anchor OR Montolivo. Italy 06 was won with a 4-4-1-1/4-2-3-1. Milan had Gattuso next to him. Same with Inter 10. Man U always have 2 holding mids. Bayern aswell.
It's extravagant and only Barcelona get away with it.

the equation woul have to include wages as well, it's one package so whether you're ooverpaying or saving there, it would have to be looked at as a whole especially in this particular case
